Overview

Remember that moment, in a garage or in front of a dealership’s window: you come face to face with a motorcycle, its trellis frame exposed, its raw engine look set on a minimalist structure. This is the very essence of the Ducati Monster, this recipe that has seduced 100,000 riders. But within this family, the 620, launched in 2004 and often sought after today as a used bike, for a long time played a supporting role, almost timid. The year 2004 marks a turning point for this model, notably with the arrival of the ie version, now equipped with electronic injection. The displacement rises to 618 cc, torque and power are revised upwards, reaching 60 horsepower. We often talk about the restriction of the Ducati Monster 620 ie for the A2 license, a frequent operation that does not diminish its character.

Ducati Monster 620

The transformation is not limited to the engine. The chassis draws inspiration from the ST range, with a longer wheelbase and a new Sachs rear suspension. The result on the road is tangible: handling loses a bit of its nervous liveliness, but gains almost impeccable stability. For a novice or an urban rider looking for a characterful bike for everyday use, this evolution is a blessing. The typical brutal reactions of short wheelbases are smoothed out. The engine, still faithful to the desmodromic system and air-cooling – two key elements of Ducati reliability and identity – now delivers its power with more progressiveness. The torque, 57 Nm, is more present at mid-range speeds. We get closer here to the smoothness of a Japanese bike, without however falling into anonymity. Vibrations and mechanical growls remain, like a constant reminder of the machine's living soul.

But not everything is rosy in this picture. The riding position maintains that famous pressure on the handlebars, typical of the Monsters, which can be fatiguing on long distances. And then there’s the question of braking. The Monster 620 ie, compared to its bigger sisters or competitors like the Suzuki SV650, makes a compromise here. The double disc is present, but the calipers are only two-piston. It’s effective for normal use, but a purist racer might find it limited. The weight, announced at 193 kg fully fueled, remains within the average for naked bikes of this era, but it is felt, especially at low speed.

The price at the time, 7895 euros, clearly positioned this motorcycle in a premium segment. Faced with the SV650, cheaper and sometimes more versatile, Ducati played the card of emotion and prestige. Today, on the used market, a Ducati Monster 620 ie 2002, 2003 or 2004 represents an accessible entry point into the world of Ducati, with all the charm of the desmo and this iconic design. Accessories for the Ducati Monster 620, such as specific seat covers, still allow it to be personalized. For those looking for a first motorcycle with character, a machine for the city and small roads, or simply a mechanically historic object, this Monster 620 remains a compelling proposition. It is neither the most performant nor the most comfortable, but it possesses that claw, that presence that still makes people turn to look at it in a parking lot.
