Overview
Do you remember the first Monster, that motorcycle that seemed like a happy accident, a trellis frame stripped bare and a large V-twin without fairings? In 2004, Ducati decided to give the small model, the 620, a serious boost. The goal was clear: to make this naked bike more accessible, more everyday, without sacrificing the brand's aura. We're talking about a power output of 60 horsepower, a torque of 53.3 Nm, and an announced weight of 177 kg fully fueled. The figures are modest, but that's precisely the point.

The transformation is notable. The displacement increases to 618 cc, and electronic fuel injection replaces the carburetors, a giant leap for reliability and regularity. The heart remains an air-cooled V2 with desmodromic valve actuation, a sound and sensation that purists adore. But Ducati also worked on the chassis, with an increased wheelbase and a Sachs rear shock absorber. The result? The Monster 620 ie 2004 loses a bit of the nervous liveliness of its ancestors, but gains remarkable stability. It is no longer caught off guard by a tight corner or a deformed road.
Compared to a Suzuki SV650 of the time, cheaper and more versatile, the Ducati makes a bet on character. Its engine, less brutal than a large Japanese twin-cylinder, delivers its power with more progressiveness, especially in the low and mid ranges. It's a motorcycle that you ride, that you don't tame. The position, typical of the Monster, remains engaged, with a decidedly forward lean on the handlebars. The suspension is firm, and the vibrations of the air-cooled engine are still present, a mechanical signature that can charm or fatigue depending on the rider.
Who is it for? Clearly, the target audience is those of novice riders looking for a first motorcycle with pedigree, or touring riders desiring a distinctive machine for the city and short getaways. With a 770 mm seat height and a 15-liter tank, it is manageable. Its braking, with a double disc at the front, is effective without being intimidating. The price of 7895 euros at the time was a debatable argument, but you were paying for the emotion, for that iconic trellis frame, for the unique rumble of its engine.
The Monster 620 ie of 2004, and its variations like the Dark version, marks a turning point. It is the first in the family to truly aim for ease of use, without denying its DNA. It opens the door to the A2 license today, and remains an interesting opportunity for those who want a Ducati without the extreme fierceness of a sports model. It is not the fastest, nor the most comfortable, but it possesses that soul that makes you choose a motorcycle, and not simply a means of transport.
