Overview
Do you remember the time when a Monster was first and foremost a telescopic fork, a large round headlight, and a raw rebellious air? In 2006, the Monster 620 ie had already evolved considerably. It’s no longer the over-excited little beast of the early days, but it hasn't sold its soul to the devil either. With its 618 cm3, fuel injection, and trellis frame that still makes a statement, it clearly seeks to appeal to a wider audience, particularly A2 license holders looking for a name that carries weight.

Under the 14-liter fuel tank, the 90° V-twin remains faithful to the Desmodromic philosophy, air-cooled, and delivers its 60 horsepower at a fairly civilized RPM. The biggest difference from the older 600s is precisely this progressiveness. The torque of 41.2 Nm arrives early, and the power curve is linear, almost Japanese in its approach. Gone are the jerky jolts, replaced by a motorcycle that is easy to handle without surprises. This is its main asset for those seeking a Ducati Monster 620 A2: it is accessible. The low seat at 770 mm and the extended wheelbase provide reassuring stability, even if purists will regret a decrease in agility in tight corners.
But be warned, this accessibility comes at a price, and not just the price tag of 7895 euros new. To gain stability and ease of use, Ducati had to make compromises. The chassis, although serious with its 43 mm inverted fork and Sachs monoshock, remains firm, very firm. The riding position locks you onto the fuel tank, typical of the Monster era, and the air-cooled twin’s vibrations are still present, forcefully reminding you of the machine’s mechanical character. On the braking side, the dual front disc does the job without shivers, but it’s far from the brutal bite of the higher models.
So, who rides this Italian motorcycle? It clearly targets the demanding novice or the urban traveler who wants character without the extravagance of the larger models. Faced with a Suzuki SV650, more versatile and less expensive, the Ducati Monster 620 ie dark relies on emotion and the prestige of the brand. Its reliability, with age and occasional maintenance, has been established, but it requires rigorous maintenance, especially the desmo distribution. This is the price to pay for that unique rumble and timeless look.
Ultimately, the Monster 620 ie from 2006 is neither the most radical nor the most powerful. But it succeeded in a bet: democratizing access to the Ducati universe without completely distorting it. It remains a motorcycle with character, with its assumed flaws and charming qualities, perfect for those seeking a first large Italian motorcycle or a daily rider full of temperament. To know everything, a good Ducati Monster 620 ie technical specification sheet will give you the details, but only a test ride will reveal if its soul vibrates in unison with yours.
