Overview
Following closely the antics of the Hypermotard, the Hyperstrada road-going variant in turn receives an engine of greater displacement. Not only to offer more consistency for the rider; also to comply with Euro4 standards. Still faithful to the concept of a lively supermotard with some urban and "weekend getaway" capabilities, this new 939 evolves a little on the exterior but primarily in its twin.
Intrepid, playful, muscular, with panniers on the hips and a large visor on the face... What contrasts. It seems that the Hyperstrada does not want to settle anywhere. Its engine also encouraged you not to get bored. To adapt to all sorts of administrative conditions without losing breath or desire, the twin evolves with enthusiasm. Offering initially 821 cm3, it seems that the connecting rods felt cramped. Consequently, it expands 6 mm on the sides, to bring the bore to 94 mm; the stroke remains unchanged, at 67.5 mm. 6 mm doesn't seem like much; but it increases the displacement of the twin by 116 cm3. Thus, the Hyperstrada 939 announces... 937 mm. Marketing has its reasons that the technique ignores, and vice versa. The power gain is minimal, only 3 horsepower. The torque benefits more, with almost 1 mkg gained. Now, roughly 113 horsepower and 10 mkg will be used for this machine. This engine is still under the control of three injection maps. The "Riding Modes" are programmed by the factory for more or less lively behaviors, and each can be refined by the user. Details:
SPORT: 110 hp with a direct response from the Ride-by-Wire at throttle opening, reduced intervention of the DTC traction control, and ABS efficiency level 1 with reduced rear lift control.
TOURING: Also 110 but with a more progressive RbW response, greater intervention of the DTC, and ABS efficiency level 2 with maximum stability during braking and lift-up control.
URBAN: Power drops to 75 hp with a progressive RbW response, even greater intervention of the DTC, and ABS is level 2 with maximum stability during braking and rear lift control.
Engine-side, the Hyperstrada does not differ from the Hypermotard 939. Design-side, it's a copy-paste of the previous generation, with the exception of slightly revised handguards. It is in terms of ergonomics and riding comfort that the evolution is marked. Since the 821, the handlebar has been raised by 20 mm; the suspension travel is reduced to 130 mm at the front and rear. The seat height, more accessible, goes from 850 to 810 mm. The rest is taken from the old 821, and no devotee will complain about it. The on-board equipment includes a high bubble, a wider seat than on the HM, two 12V sockets, passenger handles, a center stand and a duo of semi-rigid panniers totaling 50 liters of luggage. Equipment that does not deceive about its vocation; but always on the alert, the chassis remains of a strong sporting identity. Steel trellis frame, 43 mm inverted fork, Brembo M4.32 monobloc calipers with radial fixation, beautiful and finely designed monobrach, if one abstracts from its rear end that has been made heavier and its front visor.
More displacement but less agility for the Hyperstrada 939. The Ducati has gained 6 kilos and must bear a much more massive exhaust. Even seasoned athletes will forgive, because with 187 kilos dry, the machine is far from being a sledgehammer. Those in everyday life will retain in it a more comfortable, more torquey machine, still as captivating in its concept. Those from the Alps will appreciate it more than the confidentiality encountered on our lands. Admit that going on vacation with a street sprinter can be surprising. A mismatched choice, but oh so galvanizing upon waking.
