Overview
Fort complete, the Heritage range from BMW still made room for a rather particular version. This time, there’s no priority to represent a genre, an idea or a fashion. This NineT /5 draws its theme from the Series 5 motorcycles of the 1970s. A significant step in the brand’s production at the time, the 50th anniversary of which is celebrated with this model.
1969 – the CB 750 revolution arrived. The European motorcycle industry was about to get a serious shock. For its part, BMW reacted with the Series 5 and its R 50/5, R 60/5 and R 75/5. The confrontation wouldn’t really take place on the same terrain, the German bikes focusing more on tireless road performance. Half a century later, the NineT /5 doesn’t bother with competition or challenges. Beyond the tribute, it mainly wants to please. This objective has everything it takes to succeed.
With its smooth Lupinblau Metallic color, this /5 immediately catches the eye and captivates. It continues its seduction with quite a few style touches, so enthusiasts can dissect it at their leisure. This is reflected in: chrome manifolds leading to the NineT Racer exhaust line, a silver patina on the fork sleeves, wheels and the final section of the Paralever transmission, brushed aluminum for the battery and airbox covers, chrome mirrors, Scrambler-style fork gaiters, a seat with special trim, generous knee protectors, forged anodized aluminum fork levers and footrests, and above all, beautiful spoked rims – almost essential for a motorcycle cultivating timeless charm. As for the very stripped-down view of the cockpit, it will leave you all the freedom to appreciate the large “50 Jahre /5” badge placed on the tank.
Smooth in appearance, the NineT /5 also wants to please from the first rays of dawn. You know, those early mornings when your fingers crave a little warmth. They will appreciate the heated grips installed as standard. In another register, the ASC traction control is also part of the standard equipment. Without the ferocity of the latest Shiftcam Boxer, the 1170 cm3 engine still delivers 110 horsepower and 11.8 mkg. Values that allow you to maintain a good pace and rhythm. The /5 uses the same block as the other NineT models, defending the simplicity of air cooling. A 6-speed gearbox, a shaft drive and a monobrach complete the kinematics. For the brakes, same finish: ABS, two 320 mm front discs with 4-piston calipers and 1 rear 265 mm disc with a 2-piston caliper.
What inspiration for the NineT right now! After the Vaillante Scrambler and the Urban G/S Dakar Series, here it is diving into the 1970s with this revival of the Series 5. An era when the brand concentrated car production in Munich and decided to manufacture its motorcycles in Spandau, a district west of Berlin. 50 years have passed and the NineT /5 pays homage to this strategic production, which greatly multiplied the number of units leaving the assembly lines. A Pure derivative undeniably successful; for a price in line and in limited series.
