Overview
Imagine 268 kg of a Bavarian boxer growling at idle on an ochre track two thousand kilometers from home, the tank still half full and three nations to cross before sleeping. That’s exactly the territory the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure has chosen to colonize, and it reigns there with an authority difficult to contest. Since Munich slipped ShiftCam technology under the flat cylinders, this travel behemoth has changed registers. Not in its philosophy, but in its musculature.

The 1254 cc boxer now develops 136 horsepower at 7750 rpm and, above all, 143 Nm of torque at 6250 rpm, figures that do not do justice to the reality of driving. What strikes you is the density of torque available from low rpm, that sensation that the engine works little to produce a lot. The offset of the intake camshafts and valve management with two profiles allow for a suppleness that the 1200 versions did not possess to this degree. On secondary roads, in fifth gear at 70 km/h, the Adventure responds frankly without asking for a downshift. It is comfortable, even restful on long distances. The downside of this mechanical evolution lies on the scale: eight kilograms more compared to the previous generation, for a total of 268 kg in running order. Faced with a KTM 1290 Super Adventure R which weighs around 220 kg dry, the difference in size is real. BMW does not build a lightweight machine, it builds a capable machine.
The standard electronic equipment positions the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure well above the average of the category. Rain and Road modes are available from the start, accompanied by ASC anti-slip control, ABS and hill start control. But it is the Pro Riding Modes option that reveals the entire palette: Dynamic, Enduro, Dynamic Pro, Enduro Pro, DTC traction control, ABS Pro active in curves, engine braking control, and even a modulated flashing brake light in case of emergency braking. The 6.5-inch color TFT screen manages smartphone connectivity, simplified navigation via the dedicated application, and telephone calls. As an option, the semi-active ESA Next Generation suspension reads the road surface in real time and compensates for the load. If you are looking for the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure specification sheet to compare levels of sophistication, the list is long, sometimes too long to memorize at once.
The bodywork has been reworked without stylistic disruption. The wide flanks that wrap around the 30-liter tank have been reinforced with aluminum elbows and new air intakes. At 4.7 liters per 100 km, the theoretical range exceeds 630 kilometers, which is not an insignificant figure when crossing regions with a low density of service stations. The seat height at 890 mm remains an obstacle for average builds, but lowered versions at 820 mm exist in the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure accessory catalog, which is a universe in itself. BMW R 1250 GS Adventure aluminum cases, BMW R 1250 GS Adventure high windshield, heated grips, cruise control, hand guards: Munich has thought of everything and charges separately for each thought.
The base price of 18,600 euros for the 2019 version positions the machine in the high-end of the category, slightly above a well-equipped Triumph Tiger 1200 XCA and significantly more than a Ducati Multistrada 1260 Enduro in standard finish. Three versions exist: the standard version with black calipers and wheels, the Exclusive finish with golden accents and a dark character, and the HP with its Motorsport livery, golden rims, quasi-single-seat saddle and short windshield that radically changes the riding position. Fans of the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure HP version seek a more visually engaging machine, even if it means sacrificing a little road comfort. For those considering a used BMW R 1250 GS Adventure purchase, the first 2019 units already offer the essentials of what the range has subsequently offered.
This machine is aimed at a specific profile: the great traveler who accepts the weight in exchange for proven reliability, a global distribution network, and a depth of equipment that few competitors can match. Not a tool for competition tracks, not a motorcycle for beginners who are still unsure of their balance. But for those planning to cross continents with luggage, the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure remains the benchmark that others struggle to dislodge, year after year.
