Overview
Thirty thousand euros. The sum is startling, and yet, when you look at the 2015 K 1600 GTL Exclusive, the question isn't about the price but about what you get in return. BMW isn't selling a motorcycle here; the Bavarian brand is selling an argument for civilization on two wheels, a condensed version of what grand touring can produce when engineering takes precedence over marketing.

The inline six-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1649 cc is the heart of the matter, literally. Its 161 horsepower at 7750 rpm and 175 Nm of torque at 5250 rpm aren't figures of speed: they are figures of serenity. The engine’s power delivery is smooth, almost organic, and the shaft drive absorbs jolts where a chain would betray the slightest brutality. Facing a Goldwing 1800 or a Pan America in a different register, the K 1600 GTL Exclusive plays its part on a different, more European, more taut register, with its 364 kg when fully fueled, which remains manageable thanks to a low seat at 750 mm. Those looking today for a used BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive will find this 2015 vintage particularly well-equipped as standard, and the used market — France, Belgium, Spain — is full of them at prices much more digestible than the €30,350 of a new one.
What distinguishes the Exclusive version from the base GTL is a list of equipment that would otherwise have inflated the accessory bill. The ESA II pilot-controlled suspension adjusts the firmness of the dampers in real time according to the load and road surface, traction control intervenes discreetly, and the tire pressure monitoring system monitors the 120/70-ZR17 front and the 190/55-ZR17 rear without the rider having to worry about it. The adaptive xenon directional headlights, assisted by two auxiliary projectors housed in the sides of the fairing, illuminate the curves before the motorcycle even approaches them. The light sensor automatically switches between LED daytime running lights and high beams; subtle, functional, invisible.
The passenger is rarely treated so well by the competition. The rear seat of the Exclusive is wider and longer than in standard version, the armrests attach to the top case, and a heated backrest in the lower part completes the ensemble. For long journeys, it’s the difference between a passenger arriving rested and a passenger determined never to ride again. The Keyless Ride system, which detects the key within a radius of two meters to unlock the steering, ignition, fuel filler cap and central locking, participates in this logic of eliminating friction from daily life. The Hill Start Control, which blocks the front brake via ABS to facilitate starts on inclines, is of the same spirit — provided you don't use it as a parking brake, which would be a regrettable mistake.
What sticks in your throat is the absence of GPS as standard at this price level. On a grand touring motorcycle for thirty thousand euros, navigating without integrated GPS resembles a lapse of bad faith. The accessory catalog has also been rationalized on this generation, which reduces the possibilities of personalization without resolving this fundamental lack. The announced consumption of 4.6 liters per hundred kilometers is honest for this size, and the 26.5 liters of tank ensure sufficient range not to interrupt a journey every two hours. For enthusiasts of forums and feedback, exchanges around the BMW K 1600 GTL Exclusive forum confirm solid reliability on the 2015 to 2020 vintages with rigorous maintenance. The competition can copy the equipment; it hasn’t yet found how to reproduce this six-cylinder engine.
