Overview
The BMW K 1200 R, particularly in its 2007 and 2008 versions, remains a source of fascination. It's the stripped-down, uninhibited version of the sporty K 1200 S. The full fairing is removed, the face is redesigned with the robotic-design double headlight, and the result is a roadster that doesn’t go unnoticed. The objective was clear: to create the most powerful roadster on the market. With 163 horsepower from a 1157 cc inline four-cylinder engine, it indeed held that title at its launch. The torque, 127 Nm, arrives high in the rev range, but the engine is so supple and powerful that one could almost overlook the six-speed gearbox. It’s a machine that encourages riding in third or fourth gear, exploiting this almost inexhaustible reserve of power.

Regarding the chassis, the K 1200 R benefits from the innovations of its sporty cousin, but with adaptations for the roadster. The geometry is modified: the Duolever fork is less inclined, the wheelbase slightly reduced to 1580 mm. These changes, combined with a dry weight of 211 kg, give it remarkable agility. Handling is excellent, without sacrificing the stability that remains a strong point of BMW models of this generation. The riding position, thanks to a repositioned handlebar and a 820 mm seat, is more relaxed than on the S, offering an ideal compromise for winding roads or long journeys. The 19-liter tank and a consumption figure of around 4.7 liters per 100 km ensure respectable autonomy for a roadster of this category.
Compared to its direct competitors of the time, such as certain versions of the Ducati Monster or the Honda CB1000R, the K 1200 R stands out for its technological character. Its more sophisticated engine, its aluminum frame, and its Duolever/Paralever suspension give it a unique sensation of precision and mechanical refinement. However, its high base price, around €14,100 at the time, and its very particular style – that divisive front face – positioned it as a machine for a specific audience. It was aimed at the already experienced rider, seeking a high-end roadster, technologically advanced, and capable of sporty performance without the constraints of a pure racing position.
Tests of the BMW K 1200 R, particularly those of the 2006 to 2008 models, still reveal its exceptional dynamic qualities. The braking, with its double discs at the front and optional ABS, is powerful and progressive. Shaft drive transmission provides reliability and lack of maintenance, even if it imposes a slightly different sensation during acceleration. On the used market today, a well-maintained 2005 or 2006 K 1200 R represents an interesting opportunity to access this BMW technology without the initial new price. You just need to be aware that its design remains very dated and that some specific parts, such as the minimal fairing elements, may be rarer.
In conclusion, the BMW K 1200 R is a roadster that marked its era with its technical and stylistic boldness. It proves that BMW could compete in terms of raw power and character with the best Japanese or Italian roadsters, while bringing its own know-how in terms of refinement and innovation, such as its unique suspension system. It’s not for everyone; its robotic look and price make it a machine with character, but for those seeking a technological, powerful roadster with a unique history, it remains a must-discover model, particularly in its 2007 and 2008 sport versions.
