Overview

When Munich decides to democratize a working recipe, it rarely produces something timid. The BMW F 900 XR takes the concept of the S 1000 XR, this sporty crossover designed to devour miles while maintaining serious averages, and translates it into a format that ordinary mortals can actually consider buying and mastering. The result is a 219 kg machine, priced at €11,790 in 2023, which openly targets the Yamaha Tracer 9 and the Triumph Tiger 900 without apparent complexes.

BMW F 900 XR

The inline twin-cylinder engine of 895 cc deserves attention. Derived from the F 850 GS but reworked with forged pistons, revised cylinder heads, and an increased bore, it delivers 105 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 92.2 Nm of torque at 6,500 rpm. These figures do not shake specialists, but the reality of the torque curve counts more than the peak displayed on the specification sheet: the BMW F 900 XR 2023 has a flexible engine in the low range, progressive in the mid-range, which does not force you to constantly rev high to move forward briskly. The announced consumption of 4.2 liters per hundred, with a 15.5-liter tank, does not provide spectacular ranges, but it remains reasonable for the segment. Holders of an A2 license are not forgotten: a restricted version of 48 horsepower exists to subsequently access full power without changing motorcycles.

The chassis is a real success of pragmatic engineering. The perimeter steel frame serves as the backbone of a 43 mm inverted fork, supported by radial four-piston calipers on floating 320 mm discs. The aluminum swingarm comes from the GS lineage, which gives it an appreciable rigidity. The seat height varies from 775 to 870 mm depending on the chosen configuration, making it accessible to people of very different builds. It is precisely this kind of detail that distinguishes a conclusive BMW F 900 XR test from a daily frustration. The high handlebar, the dominant riding position, the generous suspension travel: all of this gives the impression of piloting a machine larger and lighter than it actually is.

BMW F 900 XR

The 6.5-inch TFT screen, the integrated Bluetooth connectivity as standard, the simplified GPS navigation: the BMW F 900 XR 2023 price justifies part of its positioning by this level of onboard technology. The Road and Rain riding modes are delivered by default, with ABS and traction control ASC. But to access the really interesting functions, DTC, cornering ABS Pro, MSR, dynamic ESA suspension or bidirectional shifter, you have to go to the options box. That’s where the shoe pinches. For those who want a well-equipped BMW F 900 XR accessories, the bill can quickly exceed the entry price of a larger-displacement adventure bike. The absence of a USB socket as standard on a machine with Bluetooth connectivity remains difficult to defend in 2023.

BMW F 900 XR

For those looking for a used or new BMW F 900 XR in this segment, the question is simple: do you want the German badge and technology, or do you prefer the more visceral three-cylinder engine of the Tracer 9 or the claimed versatility of the Tiger 900? The F 900 XR does not win on all fronts. The twin is less expressive than the Yamaha triple, the list of options remains annoying, and the tank capacity could have been more generous for touring use. But the machine is consistent, well-built, and its positioning between a sporty road bike and a light trail opens it up to a wide audience: experienced riders looking for a versatile mount without the physical constraints of a large trail, or riders returning after a long break who want to rediscover the pleasure of riding without fighting their machine. Perhaps that is its best argument.
