Overview
Forty years of GS deserves a celebration, and BMW understood this perfectly. Among the anniversary variants released in 2021, the R NineT Urban G/S holds a special place: it is the only member of the NineT family to carry trail heritage in its DNA, which earned it the jubilee color treatment. Sunshine yellow and deep black, matching the R 1250 GS and the Adventure from the same commemorative series. On this steel tubular trellis frame, the combination makes a strong statement. Hard to walk past without stopping for a second look.

But this special edition is more than a cosmetic exercise. Taking advantage of the transition to Euro 5 compliance, BMW revised the cylinder heads of the 1170 cc flat-twin, refined the torque curve and made ABSPro, a USB socket and two riding modes standard equipment. The figures on paper remain solid: 109 horsepower at 7,250 rpm, 115.7 Nm at 6,000 rpm, for a fully-fueled weight of 221 kg. It is not the lightest motorcycle in its segment — the Ducati Scrambler 1100 comes in under 200 kg — but the BMW boxer has always known how to offset its mass with generous torque and a shaft drive that is smooth and jerk-free.
The 40 Years edition goes further in terms of equipment. The gold-spoked wheels, the mixed-terrain tires in 120/70-19 at the front and 170/60-17 at the rear, the two-tone seat embroidered with a GS logo, the completely redesigned exhaust system with a chromed header and twin muffler inspired by the Scrambler: every detail has been carefully crafted. The machined cylinder head covers and the Shadow seat bracket come from the Option 719 collection, the brand's premium range. The Comfort Pack rounds things out with cruise control, heated grips and Pro riding modes, including a more aggressive Dirt mode, traction control and MSR engine drag regulation on deceleration. For a motorcycle that claims occasional off-road ability from its 850 mm seat height and 17-liter tank, it all makes sense.
The question stirring debate remains that of price. At €19,100, the NineT Urban G/S 40 Years targets a very specific audience: the enthusiast with an eye for fine machinery and a feel for the brand's history, who wants a neo-retro with trail looks without any intention of conquering the Himalayas. Compared to a Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE or a Moto Guzzi V85 TT, the positioning is deliberate: this is more a motorcycle for urban posing and winding roads than for sandy tracks. The shaft drive, mixed-terrain tires and sophisticated electronics sketch the profile of an adventure tourer rather than a true explorer. Nothing wrong with that, as long as you are clear on what you are buying.
What BMW achieves perfectly here is the synthesis between heritage and modernity. The motorcycle breathes authenticity while packing electronics that would have made a superbike blush a decade ago. For the rider who wanted a characterful GS without the uprightness of a 1250, but with the prestige of the badge and the richness of an anniversary edition, the NineT Urban G/S 40 Years ticks almost every box. Almost, because the final invoice demands a long and careful think before signing on the dotted line.
