When Benelli decides to push its 1131 cc three-cylinder beyond its usual limits, the result leaves little room for doubt: 158 horsepower at 10,200 rpm, 119.6 Nm of torque at 8,400 rpm, and a blood-red livery that signals its intentions well before the engine opens up. The TNT R160 is not a cosmetic evolution — it is a declaration of war signed by an Italian marque that still knows what it means to build a motorcycle the old-fashioned way, in the noblest sense of the term.

What strikes you first is the coherence of the approach. Without touching the displacement, engineers extracted around twenty additional horsepower over the standard TNT, pushing the machine into territory where it goes head-to-head with the Ducati Streetfighter. The comparison is not unreasonable. Both machines share this philosophy of the roadster built to impress as much on a straight line as in a tight corner. But where the Bolognese V-twin plays the card of sonic brutality and aggressive ergonomics, the three-cylinder from Pesaro offers a more linear, almost musical rev climb before exploding at the top end. The 88 x 62 mm bore and stroke, with a 12.5:1 compression ratio and four valves per cylinder, reveals an engine conceived to spin high and hard.

The R160 also carries a rare aesthetic attention for a special edition. Carbon on the exhaust, a machined alternator cover, matching airbox covers, a specific belly pan, and those 320 mm petal brake discs up front with four-piston radial calipers — none of which are trivial details on a machine weighing 225 kg fully fuelled. The 50 mm inverted fork with 120 mm of travel, the rear mono-shock with the same travel — all of this makes up a tubular perimeter frame bolted to aluminium plates that had already proven itself long before this boosted version arrived. The 820 mm seat height makes the machine's intent perfectly clear: it is aimed at experienced riders accustomed to handling powerful roadsters, not at beginners looking for their first litre bike.

At €14,895 at the time of its release, the R160 occupied a narrow but coherent premium segment. The price reflected the carbon components, the special finish, and above all the extra power wrung from an engine that was already approaching its limits in standard form. The 16-litre tank offers reasonable range despite a predictably heavy appetite in spirited riding, and the claimed top speed of 250 km/h places the machine among the elite without striving to push beyond that symbolic threshold.

What this Benelli achieves better than many of its contemporaries is avoiding any sense of datedness despite a design that had already existed for several years. The aggressive lines of the Tornado Naked Tre carry a visual robustness that stands the test of time, and the R160's all-red livery reinforces that impression of a motorcycle built to leave a mark. It makes no attempt to appeal to everyone. It targets the rider who wants a European three-cylinder with character, a distinctive exhaust note, and enough power to never feel wanting. For that precise profile, it delivers on its promise completely.
