Overview

When Aprilia decides to take the mid-size roadster segment seriously, the result doesn't look like a half-measure. The Aprilia SL 750 Shiver arrives in a crowded market, facing well-established adversaries: Ducati's Monster 796 with its 87 horsepower, the Honda Hornet reigning over urban streets, the Kawasaki Z800 growling in the mirrors. The standard recipe would have been to play it safe. Aprilia did the opposite.

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

The 90-degree L-twin powering this machine is no compromise engine. A 92 mm bore for a 56.4 mm stroke, four valves per cylinder, dual ignition, liquid cooling, and an 11:1 compression ratio: the engineers in Noale clearly decided to pull out all the stops. The result is 95 horsepower at 9,000 rpm, with 80.9 Nm of torque available from 7,000 rpm. To put the achievement in perspective, that's more than the Monster 796 at launch, and within a hair of a vintage Ducati 748's performance. On a 750, that's a statement of intent. Ride-by-wire, unusual on a machine of this size at the time, adds a sophistication that allows the engine to be tamed without being neutered.

The chassis follows the same logic. A steel tubular trellis frame anchored to aluminum plates, a 43 mm inverted fork with 130 mm of travel, radially-mounted front calipers biting on two 320 mm discs: this is an architecture that the previous generation's sport roadsters would have been proud of. What does an Aprilia SL 750 Shiver weigh? Fully fueled, it comes to 210 kg, or 189 kg dry. It's no featherweight against a Hornet, but the power-to-weight ratio remains favorable, and the 810 mm seat height places the bike in a reasonable range of accessibility for a rider of average build.

The 2013 model year, sold at €6,799, carries over the updates introduced from 2010 onward: petal discs, a slightly more committed riding position, a seat lowered by 5 mm compared to early versions. Aesthetics have always been the Shiver's strong suit. The compact lines, angular face, and sculpted exhaust outlets give this roadster a visual personality that many Japanese competitors simply lack. It's no coincidence that a used Aprilia SL 750 Shiver still turns up regularly in classifieds years after production ended: the bike has a look that ages well.

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

The criticism that can be leveled at it remains its lack of visibility in the French market. It suffered from less aggressive distribution than its Japanese rivals, and its early days were marked by some throttle-by-wire mapping that needed refinement. These were teething issues corrected in subsequent versions. What remains is a motorcycle aimed at an experienced rider seeking character over neutrality, a city dweller who wants to head out on weekends without feeling under-powered, or a fan of the Italian badge who doesn't want to spend RSV4 money. With the option of adding a homologated A2 restriction kit, it also opens the door to newly licensed riders with ambitions. At that price, with that firepower, the SL 750 clearly deserved better than the indifference it sometimes received.
