Overview

When Aprilia decides to flex its muscles in the 750 roadster segment, it doesn't come empty-handed. The SL 750 Shiver experienced a few turbulences early on, particularly around the electronic management of its ride-by-wire system, but the Noale brand managed to correct course without losing face. The result of this evolution is a motorcycle that gains bite without betraying its DNA.

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

Visually, the message is clear at first glance: aggressive color schemes, a sleek fork fairing around the headlight cluster, a redesigned tank with sharper air scoops. The seat height has been lowered by 5 mm to flirt with 810 mm, and the ergonomics become slightly more compact. One may regret the rear footpegs that lost some character, but the overall package holds up aesthetically. This machine has temperament in its hips, a taut line that doesn't try to please everyone.

The real subject is that 90-degree L-twin engine. In a market where the Suzuki Gladius tops out at 72 horsepower and the Monster 796 brushes 87, the Aprilia SL 750 Shiver delivers 95 horsepower at 9,000 rpm with 80.9 Nm of torque available at 7,000 rpm. These figures don't come out of thin air: they are the product of careful technical architecture — 92 mm bore for a 56.4 mm stroke, 4 valves per cylinder, twin spark ignition, liquid cooling, and a hybrid chain-and-gear timing system that limits mechanical losses. For a 750, it's a trump card against the Honda Hornet or the Kawasaki Z750. The Shiver plays in a court it dominates technically without any inferiority complex.

The chassis deserves attention. Steel tubular trellis frame connected to two aluminum plates, 43 mm inverted fork with 130 mm of travel, monoshock in the same proportions, radially mounted front calipers on 320 mm discs, 245 mm rear disc brake. This is the specification of a true sportbike dressed as a roadster. What does an Aprilia SL 750 Shiver weigh? Fully fueled, it comes in at 210 kg, or 189 kg dry. It's not a featherweight, but it's consistent with the category and the level of equipment on board. The 810 mm seat height reserves it for medium to tall riders, which naturally orients its audience toward experienced riders or properly-sized riders looking for a versatile roadster with serious potential.

Aprilia SL 750 Shiver

At 6,999 euros at the time of its launch, the Shiver was positioned honestly within the segment's price range. Today, searching for a used Aprilia SL 750 Shiver can turn up well-maintained examples at very reasonable prices, making it a serious alternative for anyone wanting a 90-degree twin without paying the price of a Ducati. The 15-liter tank provides decent range, and the claimed top speed of 220 km/h places the machine exactly where it should be: capable, without tipping into the absurd. The only real criticism to level at it remains its limited diffusion, a victim of a market that sometimes preferred less ambitious machines. That is often the fate of motorcycles that think too far ahead.
