Overview

When Honda resurrects the Hornet name on a 999 cc engine, the ambition is clear: to appeal to fans of all-round roadsters who want substance without chasing the hyperfighter arms race. This big hornet has no interest in intimidating premium supernaked purists — it aims squarely at the everyday rider who wants as much efficiency on a back road as pleasure on a Sunday run. At 10,599 euros, the proposition is immediately hard to ignore in the big roadster segment.

The engine powering this Hornet 900 is an inline four-cylinder with dual overhead camshafts derived from the CBR1000RR in its 2017 configuration. With 152 horsepower at 11,000 rpm and 104 Nm of torque at 9,000 rpm, the machine has generous potential without tipping into adrenaline-pump excess. The engineers worked on the engine character to fatten the response at mid-range revs, where the bulk of real-world riding actually happens. The six-speed gearbox is geared to favor pull-outs in the middle ratios, with sixth dimensioned for long highway stretches. A slipper clutch rounds out the package to prevent rear wheel lock-up under hard downshifts. The stated fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100 km allows a range of close to 290 km from the 17-liter tank.

The steel twin-spar frame was designed specifically for this model, with 70% greater torsional rigidity than the CB1000R. The weight distribution — 51.2% front, 48.8% rear — is the result of careful work on the positioning of the engine, battery, and rear shock. The 41 mm Showa SFF-BP inverted fork is fully adjustable, as is the rear Showa shock, adjustable for preload and rebound. Braking relies on two 310 mm floating discs at the front, gripped by radially mounted Nissin four-piston calipers, and a 240 mm disc at the rear. ABS is standard, with automatic hazard light activation under emergency braking. On the electronics front, three pre-configured riding modes (Standard, Sport, Rain) are complemented by two customizable modes, with independent management of power, engine braking, and the HSTC torque control system across four levels. The five-inch color TFT screen, compatible with the Honda RoadSync app, centralizes navigation and Bluetooth connectivity. Wet weight is 211 kg.

Compared to direct rivals such as the Suzuki GSX-S1000 or the Ducati Streetfighter V2, the Honda 919 positions itself as a balanced choice rather than an instrument of outright performance. It has neither the lightness nor the brutality of a Ducati, but it offers a serious electronics package, an accessible engine character, and a price that makes it coherent against evolved mid-size options like the Triumph Street Triple or the Yamaha MT-09. For those wishing to personalize their machine, optional Style, Sport, and Comfort packs are available, and an SP version exists with Brembo Stylema brakes, an Öhlins shock, a quickshifter, and five additional horsepower. A solid entry into the big roadster arena.
