Overview

When Aprilia decides to split the difference between pavement and backroads, it results in the Aprilia Pegaso 650 Trail, a machine that fully embraces its dual nature. After exploring the supermotard track with the Strada version, the Italian brand rewound the film and brought the Pegaso back to its off-road origins, relying on the same base to build a more adventurous proposition.

Aprilia Pegaso 650 Trail

The project is not a revolution, but that is precisely what makes it effective. Spoked wheels replace the stick wheels, fitted with hybrid tires, suspension travel is increased to absorb the shocks of rough tracks, and a trail-style fender is added under the fork head. The 45 mm fork does the job, as does the high-strength steel swingarm. Result: the machine now accepts rocky paths without drama, while remaining comfortable on national roads. The 100/90-19 tires at the front and 130/80-17 at the rear set the tone for a moderate trail, not a committed enduro.

Regarding the engine, Aprilia doesn't touch what works. The 659 cc four-valve single-cylinder engine, derived from the Yamaha block, remains the heart of the powerplant. A specific mapping allows for 50 horsepower at 6,250 rpm and 61.3 Nm of torque at 5,250 rpm, slightly above the Japanese Stradivarius version. It’s not an engine that defies the laws of physics, but it delivers sufficient power to reach 160 km/h at the end of a straight line with its 168 kg dry weight. The five-speed chain gearbox manages the transition between engine speeds smoothly. On Aprilia Pegaso 650 Trail forums, owners often agree on this point: the mechanics are healthy, reliable, and don't require a surgeon's attention.

Practical equipment deserves a nod. Two integrated storage compartments, one under the seat, the other above the 16-liter tank, an analog-digital hybrid dashboard controlled from the left handlebar switch, an adjustable bubble on two positions: Aprilia thought of those who chain kilometers without wanting to sacrifice everyday comfort. The 820 mm seat suits most builds, but an option allows for an additional 40 mm to gain ground clearance for those who want more ground clearance. With a wheelbase of 1,479 mm and 270 mm of ground clearance, the position is balanced, neither too aggressive nor too static.

This Pegaso Trail 2006 clearly targets the urban all-rounder who dreams of wider horizons on weekends. It doesn't claim to play in the yard of BMW F 650 GS or Suzuki V-Strom 650, more muscular and more expensive machines. At 6,499 euros, it offers a serious value proposition for an assumed mixed use. Occasional trail enthusiasts often look for 2005, 2006 or 2007 models, years when the Trail version found its definitive balance. It’s not the bike that will push you to your limit, it’s the one that will make you want to get back in the saddle every morning.
