Overview
When a Chinese manufacturer decides to tackle the A1 license trail segment, it takes a calculated risk. Zontes, a brand from Guangzhou that is gaining strength in the European market, has not simply stuck a high handlebar on a roadster: the 125 Hyper Trail displays a genuine aesthetic proposition, with angular lines and an inverted fork that clearly sets it apart from the competition. At €3,587, it plays in the yard of the Honda CB125F and other Yamaha MT-125, but with a radically different stance.

Under the 12.5-liter tank, the 125 cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine runs up to 9,000 rpm to deliver 14.6 horsepower. This is within the A1 standard, as expected. The torque of 12.7 Nm arrives at 7,000 rpm, which requires maintaining the revs to progress correctly, especially when loaded. The six-speed gearbox manages the gear ratios well, and the square stroke — 52 mm bore for 58.7 mm stroke — with a compression ratio of 12.5:1 indicates an engine oriented towards torque rather than revs. On the road, the announced top speed of 110 km/h is sufficient for everyday use and secondary roads. On the highway, however, the Hyper Trail will suffer.
What immediately impresses is the chassis. A reinforced steel frame, an inverted fork and a single rear shock absorber: the suspension package is serious for the segment. The 150 kg when fully fueled makes it one of the lightest machines in its trail category, which is immediately felt in maneuverability. Disc brakes at each wheel complete a coherent architecture. Zontes doesn't tinker here — there is a real intention to produce a capable machine, not a dressed-up toy.

The target audience is clearly the young license holder who wants to avoid the "small scooter disguised as a motorcycle" look and demands something visually striking. But the Hyper Trail can also convince a city dweller who wants to escape on the weekend on small, bumpy roads without breaking the bank on maintenance. Reliability remains the usual question mark with Chinese brands in Europe, even though Zontes has been working for several years to establish a service network worthy of the name. It is a gamble worth following.

Facing a KTM Duke 125 or a Husqvarna Svartpilen 125, the Zontes displays a significantly more accessible price for comparable technical equipment. It still lacks the image and resale value of its Austrian competitors, but for a first purchase without plans for a quick resale, the price argument holds water. It remains to be seen how it will perform over several seasons to see if the promise holds beyond the catalog.
