Overview
Once in a generation, a motorcycle embodies the racing spirit so perfectly that it becomes an icon. In 2012, the Yamaha YZF-R6, already formidable, dons a livery that speaks to the soul of every speed enthusiast: the WGP 50th Anniversary kit. This is not a technical update; the machine was already refined, but a vibrant tribute to the brand’s fifty years of competition. The pearlescent blue and white, striped with red, is an exact replica of the M1s entered at Laguna Seca and Assen in 2011, themselves a nod to the machines of the 60s. At this price, nearly €12,500, you are buying more than just aesthetics: you are acquiring a piece of history, grafted onto one of the most radical superbikes on the market.

Beneath this celebratory finish beats the heart of a killer, unchanged since its last major overhaul. The 600 cm3 four-cylinder engine, with its dizzying compression ratio of 13.1:1, is a marvel of complexity. You have to make it sing high, beyond 10,000 rpm, for it to deliver its 129 horsepower, but what a reward! The YCC-I variable intake and the YCC-T throttle valve electronic control work in concert to compensate for the lack of low-end torque, an inherent weakness of the category. The result? A power curve that explodes at high rpm, propelling the machine to a top speed approaching 270 km/h. On the track, it is an absolute weapon. On the road, it demands total commitment from the rider, almost an asceticism.
The chassis, for its part, is a lesson in finesse. The Deltabox aluminum frame has been refined in places, gaining selective rigidity for an even purer transmission of sensations. The braking system, with its two radial monoblock calipers and 310 mm discs, is of exemplary power and feel. With a seat height of 850 mm and a wet weight of 189 kg, it is not the most welcoming, but once launched, it disappears. The 41 mm inverted fork and the single rear shock offer precise adjustments for those who want to exploit them. It is a motorcycle that forgives no approximations, but rewards a hundredfold every piloting effort.

Faced with competitors such as the Honda CBR600RR or the Kawasaki ZX-6R, the R6 is clearly positioned as the most extreme option, the most track-oriented. It is spartan, demanding, and far less versatile than a Triumph Daytona 675, for example. Its 17-liter fuel tank and aggressive riding position make it a demanding road companion. But that is not its role. It is the preferred tool of the purebred track rider, the one who seeks surgical precision in corner entry and absolute stability at the lean angle.
So, is this anniversary edition worth it? Absolutely, for the collector or enthusiast who wants to combine historical emotion with raw performance. For others, a standard R6 will do the same relentless work on a stopwatch. But it must be recognized that this WGP livery gives this precision mechanism a particular aura. It recalls that within these aggressive lines and under this narrow fairing lies the DNA of victory, a philosophy that Yamaha has hammered on race tracks around the world for half a century. It’s the icing on an already very, very rich cake.
