Overview
Can a Yamaha custom really handle long distances? That was the question posed by the XVS 950 Tour Classic in 2011. At the time, with the Royal Star Venture discontinued, loyal riders of the brand with the tuning fork found themselves a little orphaned. They had to either jump to an FJR 1300, a radically different machine, or modify their Midnight Star with accessories. The Tour Classic was Yamaha’s answer: a boulevard cruiser dreaming of being a lightweight bagger, without denying its cruiser roots.

The gamble was bold. Take the base of the Midnight Star, that 942 cm³ V-twin air-cooled engine delivering 54 horsepower and a generous torque of 76.5 Nm from low RPM. Sufficient mechanics, but not flashy. It’s not a wave-making factory, those seeking brutal thrills will look elsewhere. Its strength lies in its relaxed character and proven reliability. Add three key elements: a large windscreen, a pair of rigid saddlebags, and a sissy-bar. Suddenly, this 278 kg custom, fully fueled, gains versatility. The 17-liter tank and low 675 mm seat promise entire days of riding without fatigue, sheltered from the elements and with room to store equipment. It’s light touring, in the American style, but without excess.
However, it is important to keep your feet on the ground. At nearly €9,500 at the time, the bill was not insignificant. It was in the yard of well-equipped customs, but the belt drive and single disc front brake reminded you that you were still on a platform designed for style above all else. The competition, particularly Harley-Davidson with its Sportster 883 Low, often offered less storage but more panache and customization. The Tour Classic, on the other hand, clearly targeted the novice touring rider or the settled customizer who wants to venture further, without sacrificing comfort and relaxed style.
Ultimately, this Yamaha XVS 950 Tour Classic was an honest, but somewhat too sensible, proposition. It filled a gap in the range without revolutionizing the genre. For those seeking a first touring experience on a custom base, with a defined bagger look and simple mechanics, it did the job. But it perhaps lacked that spark, that roaring personality that makes purists swoon. A compromise motorcycle, therefore, efficient and practical, but which did not leave the imperishable memory of an icon.
