Overview
Are you looking for a custom motorcycle with a substantial presence, that looks great in photos, but remains affordable and doesn't require a master's degree in mechanics to ride? The Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star, especially in its classic 2005 version or found today as a used model, could well be your mount. It plays a remarkable appearance game: with its imposing fenders, its bulging tank, its massive forks, and this fake clutch cover that creates an illusion, it loudly proclaims its status as a mid-weight custom. It doesn't have the power of an American V8, but it knows how to look good to show off in the streets.

Its engine, a 649 cc V-twin, won't propel you into the scenery. With only 40 horsepower and 51 Nm of torque, it's more civilized than brutal. But that's its strength for a novice or a relaxed traveler: it's available from low RPM, doesn't throw any surprises, and allows you to ride without stress. You will never be the king of the autobahn with a top speed of 150 km/h, but for country or city rides, it is more than enough. The modest compression ratio of 9:1 speaks of a simple, durable engine that doesn't seek extreme performance but regularity.
The real luxury on this machine, and a major argument for those who want a worry-free motorcycle, is its shaft drive transmission. The shaft drive on this Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star is a blessing. It requires zero maintenance, doesn't get dirty, and operates with total discretion. You forget it exists, and that’s exactly what’s wanted: to be able to focus on the road, not on the lubrication of a chain. For a custom used daily or for trips without pretension, it is an undeniable asset compared to, for example, a Harley-Davidson Sportster which retains its chain.
But this Drag Star is not a perfect motorcycle. Its dry weight of 214 kg, combined with a rather basic suspension, gives it a handling characteristic... typically custom. The position is low and relaxing, the 695 mm seat height is accessible, but on a degraded road, the double cradle frame and the 41 mm forks will transmit every imperfection. You will feel the vibrations, and your back might remind you after a few kilometers. It is maneuverable in the city thanks to its low center of gravity, but it is not a comfortable motorcycle for very long distances. It is a machine for style, for short or medium journeys, not for grand touring.
Ultimately, who should consider it? The beginner who wants a custom without the complexity (and the price) of a Harley, the urban rider looking for a visual presence with Japanese reliability, or the used buyer who wants a custom with minimal maintenance thanks to this Yamaha shaft drive. With a 16-liter tank and this frugal engine, it is economical. Its price at the time, around 7600 euros, was reasonable, and on today's used market, it represents a safe bet. It doesn't dream with its performance, but it perfectly fulfills its role: to be a beautiful, simple and honest custom motorcycle for those who prioritize looks and ease of use.
