Overview
Who said you needed at least a large twin-cylinder engine to look like a real custom? In 2001, the Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star was already playing with the big boys, visually at least. With its generous 16-liter tank, its bulging fenders, its monumental faux clutch cover, and this imposing front fork, it loudly proclaims its belonging to the cruiser world. The Softail-style chassis, which hides the rear shock absorber, completes its low and stocky profile that inevitably evokes certain Harley-Davidson models. For a little over 210 kilograms dry weight, it is an aesthetic success that flatters the rider's ego.

Underneath this disguise of a large machine, however, beats a reasonable heart. The 649 cm3 V-twin is refined, civilized, and above all, very economical. With only 40 horsepower at 6500 rpm, it is far from the wave of power. The philosophy is elsewhere: its torque of 51 Nm available from 3000 rpm ensures a nice suppleness. This engine will not rip your arms off, but it pulls without complaint from the first revolutions, perfect for leisurely rides or urban driving. The final shaft drive on this Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star is the icing on the cake. No more chain maintenance, no more grease to fling, just absolute discretion and mechanical reliability. This is a significant argument for those looking for a classic motorcycle without the hassles of yesteryear.
But every custom has its price, and not just on the price tag. The riding position, feet forward and back straight, is a classic of the genre. It is comfortable on smooth asphalt, but quickly becomes a sentence on a broken road. The back absorbs the shocks, and the rear suspension, not very forgiving, can be abrupt. The handling is surprisingly good for a motorcycle with a wheelbase of 1610 mm, making it quite agile in the city, but don't dream of sporty rides. The braking, with its single disc at the front, is just sufficient for the peaceful pace that suits it.
So, who is the Drag Star for? For the novice attracted to the cruiser style who doesn't want a mechanically demanding machine. For the custom enthusiast looking for a reliable and economical mount, both in terms of purchase and use. It represents a seductive and less intimidating entry point than larger displacement models. Today, finding a used Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star Classic, 2005 model or other year, is an excellent idea to acquire an authentic custom without breaking the bank. It is an honest motorcycle, which fully assumes its role: to offer style and relaxation, without pretension or unpleasant surprises. For the adventurer or track rider, move along. For those who want to savor the journey without rushing, it still has a lot to say.
