Overview
What if a 144 kg machine and 9 liters of fuel could carry the aura of a large cruiser? Yamaha attempted it with the XVS 125 Drag Star, a direct response to the Honda Shadow 125 that threatened its Virago. The Japanese manufacturer brought out the aesthetic artillery: a massive tubular double cradle frame, wide tires, a stocky profile that is deceiving. At first glance, it plays in the 600 class, a fairly successful visual bluff.

But beneath this false big-bike suit, the 124 cc V-twin engine struggles to convince. 13 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 9.8 Nm of torque are not figures that inspire dreams. The twin, improved but taken from the Virago, lacks the punch to carry this weight. On paper, the maximum speed of 110 km/h seems correct, but in reality, you often have to play with the 5-speed gearbox to maintain speed, especially with two people. High-rev vibrations and a somewhat uncharismatic sound don't help. Faced with the Shadow's rounder and more user-friendly engine, the Yamaha XVS 125 Drag Star falls behind.
For beginners or urban riders looking for a custom aesthetic without the budget of a large displacement, it remains an option. The position is low with a 670 mm seat height, the mixed disc-drum braking is sufficient, and the handling is simple and stable. Its 9.5-liter tank limits travel, but it is acceptable for the city. The price of 3965 euros, at the time, placed this Yamaha XVS 125 Drag Star in direct competition with the Honda.
Ultimately, this machine is a paradox. It offers a credible custom look, a solid frame, and easy ergonomics, but its engine is its Achilles' heel. It lacks the smoothness and liveliness that make small cruisers successful. An interesting exercise in style for Yamaha, but one that, faced with the Shadow's mechanical efficiency, has mainly proven that in custom bikes, the heart is not measured only in cubic centimeters, but also in character and balance.
