Overview

Does a maxi-trail need to play off-road or remain a sophisticated road bike? Yamaha has long hesitated with the Super Ténéré, but the 2014 Worldcrosser attempts an answer by equipping the base with parts that give a serious appearance. We are talking here about a version derived from the XTZE, already loaded with electronics, which adds carbon and aluminum protections to make it look like a true adventurer. The heart remains this inline twin of 1200 cm3, which delivers 112 horsepower and 116 Nm of torque. It is a civilized engine, which pulls without brutality but with road assurance. Compared to the V4 of the Honda Crossrunner or the twin of the BMW R1200GS, it lacks sonic character and a touch of nervousness, but it has mechanical reliability that appeals to pragmatic road riders.

Yamaha XTZE 1200 Super Ténéré Worldcrosser

The real subject, with an announced weight of 265 kg fully fueled, is knowing where you want to go. The Worldcrosser adds an engine guard, carbon frame protectors, and anodized parts for the driveshaft. This is cosmetic that aims to protect the mechanics on abrasive trails. But the original tires remain road compromises, and the exhaust is the standard discreet. Yamaha could have included off-road tires and a lighting kit to truly credibilize the concept, but it is an optional accessory. The 23-liter tank and 845 mm seat remain assets for long journeys, even if the size imposes a certain mastery.

Technically, the base is already rich. The electronic suspensions, from the FJR, offer 84 combinations of settings. ABS is switchable, linked braking secures stops, traction control has three levels, and cruise control soothes monotonous journeys. There are also two injection maps, heated grips, and a center stand. For 17,500 euros, it is a complete package that rivals the equipment of BMW GS or Ducati Multistrada, but without their sporty aura or extreme versatility.

Yamaha XTZE 1200 Super Ténéré Worldcrosser

Ultimately, this Worldcrosser is a Super Ténéré dressed for image. It targets the road rider who wants to look like an explorer without really leaving paved roads. The engine is reliable and comfortable, the electronics add refinement, but the weight and lack of aggressiveness limit pleasure on committed trails. It is a machine for those who prefer the safety of options to the thrills of pure adventure. Yamaha has made a consensual maxi-trail, which seduces by its equipment but does not mark memories as a true rally-raid reference.
