Yamaha clearly felt that its large trail bike, as competent as it was on the road, lacked credibility for those dreaming of dusty trails. So, they opened the accessory box and the roll of carbon fiber to create this limited edition, which catches the eye before even turning the key.

Under the hood, no surprises: we find the solid 1200 cm3 twin-cylinder engine developing 110 horsepower and 114 Nm of torque, a supple and reliable engine designed for long distances. The steel frame and shaft drive, with its full 261 kg, confirm the grand tourer DNA. The difference lies in the equipment. The Worldcrosser is adorned with carbon fiber fairing sides, frame and lower fork protectors made of the same material, and specific trim. It’s serious stuff, but it’s worth knowing that at the time, for nearly 15,000 euros, the additional headlights and Akrapovic exhaust visible in the photos remained optional. A detail that stings.
Compared to a BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, it appears lighter, but weighs practically the same. It doesn’t have the all-terrain pretensions of a Touratech machine, nor the crazy versatility of the GS. Its role is different: it is the trail bike of the elegant adventurer, the one who wants to look like he can face anything, while knowing that its limits lie on paved roads and well-maintained trails. A seat height of 84.5 cm and a 23-liter tank make it a credible travel companion, but its true playground remains the road, embellished with a few escapades.
Today, finding a Yamaha XTZ 1200 Worldcrosser used is a treasure hunt for the trail bike enthusiast with a strong character. It appeals to those seeking an alternative to the more conventional look of the GS and other Multistradas of the time, a machine that has panache without requiring a rally pilot’s training. It’s a beautiful object, a statement of intent, more than a mechanical revolution. It won’t challenge off-piste specialists, but it will surely make you dream bigger, parked in front of a café, ready for a journey whose script you will write. A mixture of dream and reality, halfway between the living room and the desert.
