Overview

They called her the spirited workhorse, the tireless tractor, the beast of burden that laughed at potholes. At this turn of the millennium, the Yamaha XT 600, and particularly its Tenere version with its characteristic tank, wasn't trying to show off with flashy technical specifications. No, it came to set its 170 kg, fully fueled, and simple steel cradle on an immutable creed: joyful indestructibility. With its 45 horsepower delivered at 6000 rpm by an air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine, it didn't create an illusion, it did the job. Honest power, a torque of 48 Nm available early, and that unique sensation of an engine that ran forever.

Yamaha XT 600

Facing her, contenders tried to play on other strengths. The Honda XR 650, more wild, or the Suzuki DR 650, a little more road-oriented, disputed the territory. But the Yamaha XT 600 had that little something extra: a soul. It was a motorcycle with character, easy to transform into a playful supermotard with an adapted kit, or to customize into a rustic scrambler. Its new price at the time, around €5100, made it an accessible key, and it is today this economic argument that continues to support its success on the used market. Search for a used Yamaha XT 600 on Le Bon Coin, you'll see, the listings are abundant, proof of its tenacious popularity.

But don't be fooled by its good-natured appearance, it was quite an adventure companion. The 15-liter tank and the 41 mm fork with more than 220 mm of travel opened the paths to her. It wasn't a pure enduro, too heavy for that, but it was the undisputed queen of accessible trail riding, the perfect mount for swallowing winding tarmac and venturing onto a dirt track without drama. In the city, its seat height of 855 mm offered a king's visibility, and its supple engine with its forgiving five-speed gearbox made it a queen of the ring road.

However, it is important to put things straight. Yamaha, on this generation as on previous types 3TB or 43F, has never been very generous on two points. The braking, with its two simple discs, is just correct, never biting. And aerodynamic protection? It is almost non-existent, a small shield that is more symbolic than effective. This is the price to pay for this absolute mechanical simplicity.

So, who rides this legend? For those looking for a first large displacement without headaches, for the traveler who wants a modern draft horse without electronics, for the tinkerer who dreams of a solid base for a scrambler project. The Yamaha XT 600 is not the fastest, nor the most technical. But it is a faithful companion, an honest mechanic that has written a part of the history of trail riding. Buying a used Yamaha XT 600 Tenere is acquiring more than a motorcycle, it is embarking on a piece of motorcycle heritage, unbreakable and smiling.
