Overview
Who would have bet, ten years ago, on Rieju's strong comeback in the adventure middleweight segment? The Spanish brand, long confined to small-displacement machines and competition off-roaders, shifts up a gear with this Xplora 557 X and takes aim at a considerably more contested market. The gamble is bold, the price of €6,459 frankly aggressive, and the question deserves to be asked plainly: is this a genuine adventure motorcycle or a catalogue of compromises?

Beneath the bodywork lies a 554 cc inline twin with four valves per cylinder, producing 47 horsepower at 8,500 rpm with 51 Nm of torque available from as low as 4,500 rpm. These figures won't keep Yamaha or Honda engineers up at night, but they tell an interesting story: a torque curve biased toward the lower rev range, useful on gravel tracks as much as on loaded national roads. Restricted to 47 hp to comply with the A2 licence, the Xplora 557 X clearly targets new riders who want to explore the open road without being overwhelmed by their own machine. The 150 km/h top speed confirms this positioning: this is not a sports tourer, but an accessible travel tool.
The steel tube perimeter frame carries a dry weight of 215 kg, an honest figure in this category — slightly above a Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, but below more muscular displacements such as the Ténéré 700. The 43 mm inverted fork with 150 mm of travel, paired with a rear monoshock of equal amplitude, promises decent behaviour on degraded surfaces without claiming the versatility of a machine built for serious off-road use. The 20-litre tank is genuinely good news: at a moderate pace, range should exceed 350 km, which matters when you're talking about light touring.

What gives greater pause is the single front disc. On a 215 kg motorcycle with road-touring ambitions, this is a concession worth noting. The competition consistently offers radial calipers and twin front discs in this price range. Rieju may compensate through the price tag, but a rider loaded with luggage would appreciate a more reassuring setup when it comes to bite.

Euro 5+ compliance and a six-speed gearbox reflect a genuine commitment to substance. For an A2-licence holder dreaming of crossing Spain or riding mountain roads without breaking the bank, the Xplora 557 X offers a coherent balance between performance and affordability. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, nor does it seek to embarrass the CF Moto 650 MT or the Honda CB500X on their own turf — but it provides a credible European alternative in a segment where geographic origin is beginning to matter to some buyers. What remains to be seen is how Rieju will manage its dealer network and parts availability outside the Iberian Peninsula, because that is often where long-term loyalty is won or lost.
