Overview
There is something ironic about this story. In 2022, MV Agusta had attempted to venture into the accessible trail segment with its Lucky Explorer 5.5, a machine that promised much and nearly vanished from the radar almost immediately. The project was abandoned, acquired by QJ Motor, and it is ultimately Rieju, the Spanish brand in full renaissance, that gives it a second life under the name Xplora 557. An assumed recycling, sometimes seen in the Chinese motorcycle industry, that raises a genuine question: does this failed Italian mechanical platform become a coherent Spanish proposition?

The silhouette sets the tone. The dual LED headlight unit creates a convincing impression, and the fairing proportions suggest a larger displacement than reality. You could almost mistake it for an 800cc machine from a distance. Up close, the 554cc liquid-cooled parallel twin reveals its true ambitions: 47 horsepower at 8,500 rpm and 51 Nm of torque available from 4,500 rpm. These figures place the Xplora a step above the Benelli TRK 502 and the Honda CB500X, and put it in serious contention with the CFMoto 650MT or the Kawasaki Versys 650 — machines that each have their own loyal following. The slipper clutch and six-speed gearbox round out a powertrain package that, on paper, deserves more than dismissal.
The steel tube perimeter frame houses a pair of KYB components front and rear, with 150 mm of travel on each end. Those names raise eyebrows, especially at this price point. At €5,999, finding KYB suspension on a motorcycle of this displacement remains a pleasant surprise. The braking system follows the same logic: two 320 mm discs with radial four-piston calipers up front, a 260 mm disc at the rear, and dual-channel switchable Bosch ABS as standard. The aluminum 17-inch wheels shod with Pirelli Angel GT tires confirm that the Xplora has its sights set on tarmac before eyeing gravel tracks. This is not an adventure trail bike — it is a roadster in disguise, which is ultimately its true identity.

The 820 mm seat height represents one of the lowest accessibility points in this category, and the 218 kg dry weight remains manageable for initial handling. A sensible size, almost reassuring for a rider returning to motorcycling after a few years away. The 20-liter tank and a claimed top speed of 150 km/h paint the picture of a moderate tourer rather than a hard-charging long-distance rider. The 7-inch TFT screen with Mirror Link and navigation, backlit controls, USB-C charging, standard handguards — all of this equipment falls into the category of reasonable without ever reaching generous. The rear rack and optional panniers complete the profile of a machine conceived for extended weekends rather than transcontinental expeditions.

The real subject with the Rieju Xplora 557 is not its specification sheet. It is its long-term credibility. Rieju has managed to build trust with the Aventura across European markets, and this Xplora benefits from that positive momentum. It clearly targets the urban rider looking for a versatile tool — perhaps a return to motorcycling after a long break, or a considered first purchase. Facing a more proven Versys 650 or a more understated CB500X, it plays the equipment-to-price ratio card with a certain straightforwardness. If the build quality holds up — and that remains the only real question mark — this machine could well find its audience without having to apologize for its origins.
