Overview

Imagine a motorcycle emerging from an 80s science fiction film, an object that seems to have been designed in a world where synthesizers and neon dictated the aesthetics. This isn’t a lost KTM RC8, but a radically transformed Yamaha XSR 700 by the Portuguese workshop Ton-Up Garage for the Yard Built program. Named "The Outrun," this creation is a pure exercise in style, a visual statement that pushes Yamaha’s Sport Heritage concept into uncharted territory, that of a retro-futuristic vision with a fascinating graphic brutality.

Yamaha XSR 700 Yard Built - The Outrun -

The heart of this machine remains the 689 cc inline CP2 twin-cylinder engine, an engine known for its generous torque and responsiveness, but here, it serves as the basis for a complete metamorphosis. Ton-Up Garage literally rebuilt the motorcycle around this engine, manually welding an aluminum polygonal frame. The brushed metal finish, visible under a clear coat, and the angular lines immediately evoke the universe of films like TRON. It’s no longer a simple customization; it’s an architectural reinterpretation where every element – the 41 mm telescopic fork, the monoshock, the dual-disc braking system – is integrated into an aggressive and cold, almost cybernetic silhouette.

The workshop pursued its coherent vision by manufacturing its own wheels and installing a specific stainless steel exhaust. Homologated racing tires and the redesigned fuel tank complete this impression of a functional object from another era. Presented at the Wheels and Waves 2018 festival, this XSR 700 "Outrun" was a response to the "Back to the Future" theme. It wasn’t just a show bike; it also proved its legitimacy by winning the Punk’s Peak historic race in its category, demonstrating that aesthetic boldness can combine with performance.

This Yard Built is an exceptional piece, a concept vehicle that dialogues with the pop culture of the 80s. It is not intended for series production, with its price of 13,000 euros reflecting its status as a handcrafted work of art, but it serves as a manifesto. It shows the creative freedom allowed by the XSR 700 platform and inspires a whole community of customizers. For the collector or aesthete passionate about retro-futuristic design, it is an absolute object of desire. For the everyday rider, it remains a magnificent fantasy, a reminder that the motorcycle can also be a vehicle of ideas, a vibrant tribute to a vision of the future that, today, seems nostalgic to us.
