Overview
Do you remember the XJ models, those unassuming machines that shaped generations of riders? Yamaha took a few years off, then brought the concept back in 2009 under the name XJ6. It's a return to basics, a direct response to those seeking a serious first bike or a daily companion without extravagance. With a new price of around €6500 at launch, it positioned itself as a reasonable option against the Honda CBF600 or the Suzuki Bandit 650.

Its appearance is an interesting mix. Yamaha grafted an aggressive headlight inspired by the FZ1 onto a very understated base, creating a naked bike that has presence without being intimidating. Compared to the Kawasaki ER-6n, more playful and lightweight, or the Bandit, more raw, the XJ6 2011 displays a balanced, almost elegant profile. The muffler hidden under the engine contributes to this streamlined silhouette. For those who preferred a version with fairing, Yamaha also offered the XJ6 Diversion F, on the same mechanical base.
The heart of the machine is an inline four-cylinder engine derived from the previous FZ6, itself from the R6. But here, everything is reworked for docility. 78 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and a torque of 59.7 Nm at 6100 rpm, these figures speak of an engine designed for flexibility and versatility, not for showing off on the track. The steel frame, conventional fork, and single-sided swingarm are clear choices: you are far from a high-performance chassis, but you gain in simplicity and maintenance cost. The announced weight of 205 kg fully fueled is honest for this category.
This pragmatic approach defines its audience. The XJ6 is the perfect motorcycle for the novice rider taking the A2 license, with a version restricted to 47.5 hp easily available. It is also an excellent choice for the urban traveler who wants a reliable machine, capable of daily commutes and short getaways, with a 17.3-liter tank and a 785 mm accessible seat. It won’t surprise you with its aggressiveness, but it will never let you down with its whims. For a used model today, it is a safe bet, especially since its technical specifications reveal proven mechanics.
Its flaw? Just this sometimes excessive wisdom. In a market that is turning towards fun and raw emotion, like the ER-6n, the XJ6 can seem a little too refined. Its braking, although sufficient, is not memorable, and its dynamics are more focused on stability than on liveliness. But that’s also what makes its charm: a motorcycle that doesn’t seek to impress you, but to serve you faithfully. To know all about its specifications, consulting a detailed Yamaha XJ6 technical sheet remains essential, especially for points such as tire pressure or available decoration kits to personalize your machine.
