Overview
Has Yamaha finally found the recipe to resurrect the spirit of the legendary XJ models of the 90s, those all-purpose machines that shaped a whole generation of motorcyclists? With the 2009 XJ6, the Japanese manufacturer attempts a return to basics, seven years after leaving a gaping void in its catalog. It was far removed from the FZ6s, which were too edgy and specialized for a novice. Here, the objective is clear: to offer an accessible, versatile, and above all, affordable motorcycle. With a new price of around €6000, the message couldn't be more direct.

Visually, it defends itself rather well for a machine with a utilitarian vocation. It borrows its look from the FZ1, with its aggressive headlight and its ruby-shaped light signature. The profile is sharpened, the rear is cleaned thanks to a discreet silencer housed under the engine. It thus avoids the trap of a sad and soulless machine. Compared to a Honda CBF, as wise as a picture, or a Kawasaki ER-6n, mischievous and light, the XJ6 displays a sharper, almost muscular character. The Suzuki Bandit, on the other hand, seems more rough around the edges. It's a tempting look for a philosophy that is ultimately very down-to-earth.
Because beneath this bodywork that evokes a streetfighter, beats a reasonable heart. The engine is the centerpiece. It is a 600 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, inherited from the FZ6 and therefore, in lineage, from the old R6. But everything has been reworked for flexibility and availability. The 78 horsepower arrives high, at 10,000 rpm, and the torque of 60 Nm awakens earlier, at 8500 rpm. It is an engine that requires being revved, but it is linear and predictable, perfect for learning or a quiet ride. For those aiming for the A2 license, a version restricted to 47.5 hp was obviously on the program. The technical specifications of this Yamaha XJ6 reveal a pragmatic approach: diamond steel frame, conventional 41 mm fork, front dual-disc braking and single rear braking, with ABS as an option. Nothing revolutionary, but everything is there to ensure reliability and controlled maintenance costs, a significant argument for those looking for a used Yamaha XJ6.
On the saddle, we discover an honest motorcycle. The weight when wet, 205 kg, is forgotten once underway. The 78.5 cm seat is accessible, the riding position is upright and relaxed. It doesn't have the liveliness of an ER-6n, its steel frame being less lively than an aluminum twin-spar, but it is stable and reassuring. It is the perfect companion for everyday use or first trips. For long-distance travelers, Yamaha also offered the Diversion F version, with full fairing. Whether you opt for a new model at the time or a used Yamaha XJ6 today, the observation is the same: it is a machine without major flaws, but also without a crazy spark. It does everything well, without ever surprising you. Its strength was its value for money and its robustness, qualities that explain why many are still found on the classifieds and elsewhere.
