Overview
So, does this 2014 XJ6 SP 600 really have bite, especially for 0 to 100 km/h acceleration? Let's be frank. With its 78 horsepower delivered at 10,000 rpm, we are far from the brutal punch of a 600 supersport. The inline four-cylinder engine, inherited from the previous FZ6, is here detuned and reworked for torque. As a result, 0 to 100 km/h is completed in just under 4 seconds, it’s lively without being overwhelming. That’s precisely its philosophy: accessibility that doesn't intimidate the novice, but offers enough punch to have fun on the open road. We immediately think of the competition of the time, such as the Suzuki Gladius or the ER-6n from Kawasaki. Faced with these twin-cylinder engines, Yamaha plays the card of finesse and regularity, with a more cultivated engine that likes to rev without ever becoming aggressive.

Visually, this limited-edition SP series plays on appearances with carbon fiber trim and a beautiful Matt Grey finish that gives it a serious air. The bi-level seat and stickers on the radiator fairings clearly aim to infuse a sporty spirit. But let's not be fooled: there are no Öhlins in the suspension, no major mechanical upgrades. It is primarily a trim package, a paint job that does not radically transform the beast. For the announced price of 5999 euros at the time, it was a clever positioning, offering the look without the salty technical bill. The diamond steel frame and 41mm telescopic fork remain safe bets, solid and predictable, perfect for swallowing daily asphalt or the first turns in complete serenity.
On the saddle, that’s where it seduces. With a wet weight of 205 kg and a seat height of 785 mm, the XJ6 SP is easy to approach. It inspires confidence immediately, whether in the city or on departmental roads. The braking, with its two front discs, is effective and progressive, typical of Yamaha bikes of this generation. The 17-liter tank promises good autonomy for weekend rides. It is an honest machine, which does not claim to be what it is not: a track-focused machine. It aims rather at the young license holder coming from a 500, or the touring rider looking for a versatile mount, reliable and with a less radical character than a pure sports bike.
So, who should today cast their eye on a 2014 XJ6 SP 600? If you are looking for a first large displacement bike with a balanced character, with a supple engine and a reassuring chassis, it is an excellent candidate. Its unique look in Matt Gray prevents it from going unnoticed. But if your main criterion is raw performance and extreme sensations, look elsewhere. It excels in the art of intelligent compromise, offering just enough sportiness for pleasure, without the drawbacks of overly demanding mechanics. A roadster that has aged gracefully, precisely because it has never sought to be the fastest in the parking lot.
