Overview
Are you looking for a first large-displacement motorcycle that won't bite your fingers, a four-cylinder engine as reliable as a jackhammer, without breaking the bank? Then take a look at this Yamaha XJ6 600. Launched in 2009 to replace the old XJ, this roadster has found its audience, and the 2013 version we are examining only refines a recipe that was already well-established. It's far from a revolution: a few LEDs here, a retouched headlight fairing there, a non-slip seat. The essentials remain, and that's a good thing. For a little over €6,500 new at the time, it offered a very correct entry ticket into the world of 600s, especially compared to a Honda CBF 600 often perceived as more bland, or a Kawasaki ER-6n more nervous but with a less refined twin-cylinder.

The heart of the beast is, of course, its engine. This 600 cm3 inline four-cylinder engine, inherited from the FZ6 and therefore the legendary R6 of 2003, has been skillfully detuned for the occasion. We're talking about 78 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, and a torque of 60 Nm available fairly early. The philosophy is clear: flexibility above all. It's an engine that forgives, that pulls cleanly from medium revs, and that avoids the nervous jolts of purely sporty engines. For an A2 license in a restricted version, or for a neo-holder of a large cube license, it's a real pleasure of progressive power delivery. Opinions on the Yamaha XJ6 600 engine often converge on this ease of use in everyday life, whether in the city or on a winding road.
But don't be fooled, beneath its appearance of a gentle touring bike, the XJ6 has character. Its simple and robust steel frame offers a rather neutral geometry. The wheelbase of 1440 mm and the conventional 41 mm fork promise stability more than aggression. It's a motorcycle that inspires confidence, that doesn't surprise, perfect for learning to tame a bit of power without stress. The braking system, with its two front discs, is effective without being brutal, and ABS as an option (a must in my eyes on this type of machine) added a welcome safety margin. With a 17-liter tank and a curb weight of 205 kg, it is also economical and maneuverable in traffic jams.
So, who is it for? For those who want to taste the sensation of a smooth four-cylinder without the hassles and price of a pure sportbike. For those looking for a versatile motorcycle, capable of weekend rides and weekday urban commutes. The Diversion F version, with its fairing, further reinforces this touring aspect. Today, interest is largely focused on the used market. The price of a 2014 or 2011 Yamaha XJ6 600 in France varies enormously depending on condition and mileage, but serious deals can be found. It's a safe bet, a virtually indestructible engine, with even used engines found for custom projects, such as creating an XJ Cafe Racer. Its drawback? Perhaps a lack of punch for experienced riders seeking thrills. But as a first serious machine or a trouble-free daily mount, it fulfills its mission with typical Japanese efficiency. Proof that simplicity, when well-balanced, remains a motorcycle quality of the highest order.
