Overview

Upon entering the market, the Ténéré 700, or T7 for those in the know, brought a breath of fresh air to the trail category. Finally, a descendant of its lineage of adventure bikes, where the scent of sand isn’t just a lure. Hurrah for a machine that isn’t afraid of sidewalks and rocks when most SUVs shudder at the thought of crossing a branch. Yamaha holding a fine gem in its hands, it’s time to give it a few upgrades to maintain its enviable position.

It’s not uncommon to see a T7, whether on an avenue or between two reefs of stone. The Yam knows how to be versatile and retains that little bit of sandy dream every time you straddle it. A scent that Yamaha sprinkles with a bit more modernity with this new version.

Since 2019, it had only changed with color schemes and not at all with its bodywork. It’s rather nice to see Yam retouching the style sparingly and without falling into the nebulous Sino-productions of some productions. The Ténéré retains this rally-raid profile for the general public with subtle refinements: revised rear flanks, more slender fairing panels, a redesigned skid plate, more prominent handguards; and the most remarkable element is undoubtedly the modernized headlight assembly. The 4 photon monocles are still there but in a more trendy rectangular format, supported by an aluminum bracket. The Ténéré 700 takes a step forward without being swept away by fashion trends.

It also gets a new seat, the footrests of the old World Rally (10 mm wider), a relocated kickstand switch, reinforced luggage rack mounting points, a modified clutch cover, an advanced fuel tank for better weight distribution, and a few odds and ends.

The Ténéré 700 made its first battlefield the least amount of electronics possible, in order to leave the rider master of the evolutions. Over time, it has yielded to the sirens of technology but while keeping a foot on the brake.

Alongside, the Ténéré’s human-machine interface benefits from more complete new switches, a USB-C port, and smartphone connectivity to pilot the whole thing (calls, messages, music, navigation).

Let’s forget the phone. It’s not going to move the bike forward but this good old 689 cm3 twin – more than 10 years since it existed with the MT-07. The opportunity to give it more horsepower? No, just a few improvements: Euro5+ compatibility, a modified air intake for more low-end torque, a revised clutch, and modified gearbox components for smoother gear changes. Enthusiasts will therefore happily rediscover this supple, progressive and playful engine, comfortably delivering 73 horsepower and particularly complementary to the T7's stature and missions.

One of those is to go everywhere, on nice or rutted roads. The suspensions were designed for that. The new Ténéré 700 receives adjustment of the preload on its 43 mm inverted fork, now allowing everything to be adjusted at the front. For the rear, a new linkage increases the stroke. Paired with a revised mono-shock, this time fully adjustable, this kinematics should bring more progressiveness and driving comfort. Apart from these changes, the hardware presents the same well-defined off-road specifications: 210 mm and 200 mm of travel (F / R), 240 mm of ground clearance, 21 and 18 inch spoke wheels with thin, knobby tires, a substantial 875 mm seat height, and an aluminum skid plate.

New fork tubes reinforce the front. As for the steel tubular frame and its friend the aluminum swingarm, they are carried over without modifications.

The Ténéré 700 also knows how to think about several levels of accessibility. Namely that it is available in A2 and, new for 2025, that there is the possibility of choosing suspensions with less travel. The "low seat" version revises the travel of the suspates to 190 and 180 mm to bring the seat back to 86 cm from the ground. But in turn, you will have a little less ground clearance.

From one T7 to another, from one generation to another, the changes are not glaring but allow for relevant evolutions without denaturing the trail. Because it is a true trail, always ready to eat dirt as well as damaged asphalt (pleonasm, in our country).
