Overview

Alongside the incredible R1 RACE, which legitimately suggests a MotoGP machine, the R1 continues its career (exclusively on track) with the GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) version. This latter aims to meet the requirements of the FIM Superstock regulations. For 2025, Yamaha is evolving this version for weight and performance gains. Let's take a closer look!

Light is right

This fairly well-known saying by Colin Chapman (a Lotus founder and engineer) applies easily to the motorcycle world and even more so to racing. Less weight means more maneuverability and less constraint for the engine, therefore more performance. Yamaha has strived to achieve this by offering the R1 GYTR new carbon fiber fairings. The shape of these has also been revised to optimize aerodynamics, which, of course, doesn’t escape the trend of winglets. This new fairing will be delivered in a black finish (lighter than painted) with a sticker kit.

If the rider can hide behind this beautiful fairing, they will also benefit from an adjustable riding position, as it is fully adjustable. These adjustments are made thanks to the triangle formed by the new handlebar, the seat/fairing assembly, and the new rear-set controls, which offer a custom position according to your height.

Another novelty this year, the R1 GYTR now functions without a key. It receives the GYTR On/Off switch. A real plus for track use, as are the standard racing stand lugs on the motorcycle.

Chassis: subtle evolutions

Given the already very impressive performance level of the motorcycle, it will take a heck of a rider to appreciate the improvements of the new model. Thus, Yamaha has chosen to retain Brembo for braking with a new Brembo front master cylinder and Stylema calipers (which appeared on the GYTR Pro model last year). The pads are the dedicated Brembo Z04 racing references. For the braking system, the R1 GYTR is equipped with the GYTR ABS emulator. The emulator allows those who wish to completely suppress the effects/intervention of the ABS.

In addition to this racing ABS, the R1 GYTR still relies on its 6-axis inertial unit to refine the settings of the assists available to the rider: Traction control, Launch control, Slide control, Front lift control, Quickshifter, 4 maps, 4 riding modes. Damping is still provided by Kayaba with a next-generation fork.

The heart of the machine is still the crossplane 4-cylinder that already equipped the first GYTR model in 2019. It delivers a little over 200 horsepower, notably thanks to the Akrapovic short exhaust (which remains under 100 dB). The R1 GYTR is equipped with the GYTR Racing ECU and wiring harness. Yamaha specifies that the GYTR ECU is directly adapted to the specifications of the SST championship regulations. This ECU allows for the acquisition and analysis of data during and after track sessions to then adapt the motorcycle to the circuit on which it is used. The story doesn’t say whether Yamaha will lend you the engineer who goes with it during your track sessions.

With a 15/42 ratio, the R1 GYTR still devours the stopwatch as soon as you twist the throttle. To handle the power, the chain is racing type with the 520 R Series reference.

What to dream of?

Reading about the continued career of this Yamaha R1 GYTR still leaves a bitter taste in the back of your throat. Even if the performance level reached by the 1000s is now stratospheric, one thinks that industrially, it remains a waste to have the basis of a motorcycle and not homologate it…

To acquire this track bike, you must go to a GYTR Pro Shops, the only specialized and authorized dealership to distribute it.

As their budget allows, the experienced rider can largely upgrade their R1 GYTR – like this demonstration model equipped with an Öhlins high-specification fork, Brembo Superbike brake calipers, an Öhlins racing shock, lightweight wheels, programmable commodos, a thumb-operated rear brake command, etc. The bill can climb to six figures.
