Overview
What do you do when you've got an R1 in the garage and a roadster market crying out for muscle? You rip off the fairing, redesign the front end, and unleash the beast on the road. Yamaha has been applying this formula since 2016 with the MT-10, and this 2023 model year marks a serious upgrade. The 998 cc cross-plane inline four gains a few horsepower to peak at 165.9 hp at 11,500 rpm, with 111.8 Nm of torque available from 9,000 rpm. The Yamaha MT-10 1000's power places it at the top of the pack against the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS, the Aprilia Tuono V4, and the BMW S 1000 R. These are not timid rivals; neither is the Japanese contender.

The cross-plane crankshaft remains the knockout argument. No other hypernaked on the market offers this architecture, inherited directly from the race-spec R1. The result is felt through your hands: torque that builds in an irregular, almost organic way, with a raw exhaust note that the new titanium exhaust system makes even more prominent. Between 4,000 and 8,000 rpm, the torque spread has been widened compared to the previous model. On a whiff of throttle exiting a corner, the difference from a conventional inline four is striking. The electronic throttle offers four power maps, from a raw response designed for track use to a smooth mode suited for wet tarmac. Enough to reassure those wondering how much horsepower the Yamaha MT-10 1000 has and whether it's manageable on a daily basis: yes, provided you choose the right mode.
On the styling front, Yamaha made bold choices. The front end drops the angular lines of the first generation for something more fluid, more in line with the MT-07 and MT-09. The unsightly appendages around the radiator are gone, and the 17-litre tank adopts more sculpted contours. The result still divides opinion, but less than before. The MT-10 remains a motorcycle you have to earn visually, especially in the Cyan Storm livery where the aggressive character makes full sense. In the saddle, perched at 835 mm, the riding position has been revised for improved comfort. The 212 kg wet weight remains contained for a machine of this size.
The chassis draws from the same sporty DNA. An aluminium perimeter frame derived from the supersport, a fully adjustable 43 mm KYB inverted fork, an adjustable rear shock, and a long aluminium swingarm reminiscent of Superbike machines. The compact 1,405 mm wheelbase, barely longer than that of an MT-07, promises rare agility for a machine of this calibre. The braking takes a step up thanks to a Brembo radial master cylinder, with twin 320 mm discs gripped by four-piston calipers at the front and a 220 mm disc at the rear. Bridgestone S22 tyres round out a cohesive and confidence-inspiring package.

The electronics take a considerable leap forward. The 4.2-inch colour TFT display replaces the old LCD, even if the format remains modest compared to the 5-inch screens some competitors offer. A six-axis inertial measurement unit now governs lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, engine brake management, anti-wheelie, and cornering ABS. The YRC system groups all these aids into four customisable riding modes, from pure sport to a rain configuration. A bi-directional quickshifter and cruise control complete the package. The price of the 2023 Yamaha MT-10 1000 in France stands at 15,999 euros, a figure justified by this level of equipment. For the 2024 and 2025 model years, the pricing remains in the same range, with Yamaha having maintained the MT-10 1000's power output and technological arsenal. This hypernaked is aimed at experienced riders who want the temperament of a sportbike without the constraint of the riding position. A radical roadster, built for fast roads and track days alike, that doesn't try to please everyone. That's precisely what gives it its charm.
