Overview
What do you do when you've got an R1 in the garage and an engineering department with time on its hands? You rip off the fairings, redesign the front end, and unleash the beast on the road. That's been the Yamaha MT-10 1000 playbook since 2016. Except that in six years, the competition has upped its game. The Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS, the Aprilia Tuono V4, and the BMW S 1000 R have each raised the bar. Yamaha had no choice. The 2022 model year arrives with a serious overhaul, and the question deserves to be asked: how much horsepower does the Yamaha MT-10 1000 make in 2025, and more importantly, what does it do with it?

The 998 cc inline four-cylinder retains its crossplane architecture, an exclusive feature in the big roadster segment. This offset crankshaft, inherited directly from the R1, gives it a throaty voice and a torque character that nobody else offers. Power on the Yamaha MT-10 1000 climbs to 165.9 hp at 11,500 rpm, up from 160 hp on the previous version. Torque reaches 111.8 Nm at 9,000 rpm, with a reworked mid-range between 4,000 and 8,000 rpm that makes the machine far more usable in everyday riding. New intake, new titanium exhaust system: the sound gains presence without falling into vulgarity. On paper, the improvement seems modest. On the road, the added responsiveness is a game-changer.
On the styling front, Yamaha has cleaned house. Gone are the angular flanks and radiator scoops that divided opinion. The 2022 MT-10 adopts the visual language of its smaller siblings, the MT-07 and MT-09, but with a more organic, more taut presence. The face remains menacing, the headlights echo those of the R1, and the silhouette gains coherence. The aluminum perimeter frame, derived directly from the supersport, is virtually unchanged. The wheelbase grows by 5 mm to reach 1,405 mm, which remains remarkably compact for a machine weighing 212 kg wet. The 43 mm KYB inverted fork and mono-shock are fully adjustable, the 320 mm front discs bite through four-piston radial-mount calipers, and the master cylinder upgrades to a Brembo radial unit. Braking takes a clear step forward. The more welcoming seat and revised riding position add a welcome dose of comfort for high-mileage riders.
Electronics represent the other major area of work. The LCD screen gives way to a 4.2-inch color TFT, identical to the one on the MT-10 SP. It's decent without being generous: a Kawasaki Z 650 already does better in screen size. On the other hand, the suite of rider aids makes up for it. A six-axis inertial measurement unit now governs lean-sensitive traction control, slide control, anti-wheelie, two-level engine brake management, and cornering ABS. Four customizable riding modes via the YRC system let you adjust everything, from an aggressive track mode to a reassuring rain mode. The bi-directional quickshifter and cruise control round out an equipment package worthy of a top-tier sportbike.

Who is this Yamaha MT-10 1000 built for? For the experienced rider who wants superbike temperament without the back-breaking riding position. For the motorcyclist looking for a roadster that can go toe-to-toe with a Tuono V4 through a series of corners, then swallow 300 km of highway without complaint. The price of the Yamaha MT-10 1000 sits around €12,990, a figure that puts it in direct competition with the S 1000 R and slightly below the Speed Triple 1200 RS. At this level of performance, it's a solid value proposition. Yamaha has its flagship, and this 2022 model year gives it the weapons to play a leading role in the hypernaked category.
