Overview

Who still remembers the Yamaha FZ8? Wedged between the MT-09 that was about to shake everything up and the FZ1 whose architecture it borrowed, this versatile sportbike never got the recognition it deserved. Yet the 2013 model year, dressed in the Race Blu livery, finally addressed the two major criticisms leveled at the machine since its launch in 2010.

Yamaha FZ8

The first was the damping. On previous versions, the Yamaha FZ8 suffered from suspensions that were too basic compared to competitors like the Kawasaki Z800 or the Suzuki GSR750, which came better equipped as standard. In 2013, the telescopic fork became adjustable in compression and rebound, as did the rear shock absorber, which now accepted preload and rebound adjustment. On bumpy roads or when pushing hard through a series of corners, the difference is immediately noticeable. The 2013 Yamaha FZ8 finally plants its 211 kg wet weight with a composure that the 2011 and 2012 model years didn't offer. The cast aluminum frame and swingarm remain identical, but with properly calibrated suspensions, the whole package reaches another level. The second improvement concerns the exhaust, redesigned for a fuller sound and a more flattering rear profile. A minor detail, some might say. Except that on an unfaired roadster, every component counts in the overall silhouette.

On the engine side, the 779 cc inline four-cylinder hasn't changed, and that's a good thing. Its 106 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and 82.4 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm place the Yamaha FZ8 in a register that's accessible without being boring. The thrust is strong from the midrange onward, the six-speed gearbox proves precise, and the chain drive poses no maintenance concerns. With a compression ratio of 12:1 and a bore/stroke of 68 x 53.6 mm, this powerplant clearly favors top-end pull over low-rpm torque. The claimed fuel consumption of 6 liters per 100 km remains reasonable for a four-cylinder, and the 17-liter tank allows a decent range between fuel stops. Top speed comes in at 230 km/h, placing it right in the segment's average.

The Race Blu livery, inspired by the MotoGP M1 machines unveiled at the Misano Grand Prix, plays the matte grey card with blue accents on the rims, hubs, and cylinder head cover. A pinstripe runs from the flanks all the way to the tail. The result is striking, more urban than sporty, and gives the machine a presence that previous color schemes didn't provide. The seat height at 815 mm, the 1,461 mm wheelbase, and 140 mm of ground clearance make for a balanced ergonomic package, equally suited to city riding and weekend outings. To fit a Yamaha FZ8 top case bracket, the passenger grab handle removes easily, and Yamaha FZ8 parts remain readily available on the market.

Priced at 8,399 euros when new at launch, the 2013 Yamaha FZ8 now represents an excellent deal on the used market. Note, however, that the machine is not eligible for the A2 license in its standard version. Before buying a used Yamaha FZ8, check the tire pressures on the 120/70-ZR17 front and 180/55-ZR17 rear, and inspect the brake rotor and battery condition — sensitive points after a few years of service. The Yamaha FZ8 Fazer version, with its half fairing, will appeal to those who devour miles. The FZ8 S or SPR remains the most sought-after variant among spirited riding enthusiasts. Looking at the Yamaha FZ8 spec sheet, you realize this machine had only one real flaw: arriving just before the MT revolution. Yamaha FZ8 accessories are still easy to find, proof that the community remains active around this unjustly forgotten roadster.
