Overview

So, we find ourselves in the 2000s, when the tarmac buzzed with angry four-cylinders dressed in civilian clothes. In this melee where the Suzuki SV and the Honda Hornet were vying for the favor of the demanding novice, Yamaha laid down a trump card with a massive argument: the heart of an R6. The FZ6, and its faired derivative Fazer, were not just another roadster. It was a promise, to hold the madness of a 130 horsepower hypersportive within an urban and accessible setting. With 98 horsepower at 12000 rpm and a torque of 62.8 Nm at 10000 rpm, the figures announced the color: you would have to play with the tachometer.

Yamaha FZ 6

And that is precisely the entire character of this Yamaha FZ 6. Its engine, borrowed from the R6 of the time but softened by injection, remains a high-revving animal. At low speeds, it is refined, almost too wise. You can feel a little more flexibility than on the pure track bike, but don't dream: the real show begins beyond 8000 rpm. It is at this moment that the inline four awakens in a dry howl, propelling the 180 kg dry weight with a vehemence that belies its nice touring look. The transmission, a precise six-speed, is designed to exploit this narrow band where power explodes. For daily commuting, this requires a certain wrist discipline; for pure pleasure on winding roads, it is a reward.

The other major asset of this Fazer is its chassis. The die-cast aluminum frame is a beautiful piece, offering rigidity that inspires immediate confidence. The 43 mm fork and the single shock absorber, with their 130 mm of travel, are more than correct for the average roadster. They absorb imperfections without drama and are complicit when the pace accelerates. The braking system, with its two 298 mm front discs and four-piston calipers, is frank and powerful, worthy of the machine's sporting origins. On the handlebars, you are seated upright on a 795 mm saddle, a height that will reassure the majority. It is a motorcycle that is ridden with the shoulders, light and lively in direction changes, far from the heaviness of some more robust roadsters.

But what is it like against the competition? At the time, the Kawasaki Z 750, with its more generous torque at mid-range speeds, was the perfect antithesis: easier, more immediate, more "street." The FZ6, on the other hand, required participation. It was aimed at the rider who dreamed of the performance of an R6 without enduring the total physical commitment, or the sporty touring rider seeking a mechanically authentic character. Its 19.4 liter tank promised beautiful ranges, and the Fazer version's fairing made it a credible travel companion.

Ultimately, the Yamaha FZ 6 Fazer remains a unique object in the landscape of 2000s roadsters. It did not choose the ease of generous torque, but the reward of the revs. It is not the most versatile or forgiving motorcycle, but for those who accept to play its game, it offers sensations close to a sportbike, with added comfort and pragmatism. A bold bet, which marked its time with its strong character.
