Overview

The 2014 Fazer 8 is something of a testament to Yamaha’s ability to perfectly leverage its heritage. It’s far from a revolution, but in the subtle art of evolution, the brand with the tuning forks often hits the mark. The legacy is substantial: an engine directly derived from the 2004 R1, reworked to become this 779 cm3 inline four-cylinder. The result? A mechanical character with 106 horsepower, certainly, but above all, 82.4 Nm of torque, developed to be generous from mid-range RPMs.

Yamaha Fazer8

The real change compared to earlier versions, and it was expected, lies in the suspension. Gone are the excessive suppleness that bothered some on the FZ8. Yamaha has equipped the Fazer with serious settings: an adjustable 43 mm inverted fork, adjustable in rebound and compression on one side, and in preload on the other, and a monoshock that gains firmness. This was the adjustment needed to give this chassis, a diamond aluminum frame inherited from the Fazer 1000 and therefore very robust, its full coherence. The braking system, with its 310 mm front disc and radial four-piston caliper, confirms this road-sport vocation.

Who is this machine for? Clearly for the touring rider who refuses blandness. With its 17-liter tank, relaxed but engaged riding position, and this inverted fork that gives it a track-ready look, the Fazer 8 targets those who ride national roads on the weekend and tackle the ring road during the week. It positions itself as a serious alternative to the Kawasaki Z 800 of the time, perhaps more nervous, but less balanced in its overall approach. It is meatier than an FZ6, less intimidating and heavy than a Fazer 1000.

The flaw? A certain lack of boldness. Yamaha has refined a proven recipe without daring to make a radical change. The design, although refreshed with transparent turn signals and a more elegant exhaust, remains very familiar, barely distinguishable from its big sister. It is an honest, solid, versatile motorcycle, but one that will not trigger a buying frenzy with a crazy stroke of the pencil or a groundbreaking innovation. Its price, around 8900 euros, places it in the race, and nothing more.

Ultimately, the Fazer 8 proves that a motorcycle doesn’t need to be the most powerful or the most radical to convince. It is a sporty touring machine that masters its subject perfectly: offering a sonorous and fast engine, a reassuring and now well-adjusted chassis, and this versatility that makes ideal travel companions. It doesn’t make you dream in the catalog, but it inevitably seduces once in the saddle. For Yamaha, it is a safe bet, a draft horse with racing stripes.
