Do you remember the simple pleasure of a motorcycle that doesn’t seek to impress you, but to serve you? That’s exactly the playground of the 2012 Yamaha Fazer 8. Yamaha took the proven recipe of the large FZ1 Fazer, slightly reduced the proportions, and produced this sporty touring bike with disconcerting versatility. Under its assertive fairing beats a well-known heart: the inline four-cylinder engine from the previous R1, but detuned to display 779 cm3. The advertised power of 106 horsepower at 10,000 rpm doesn’t dazzle the technical specifications, but it’s a deception. Engineering focused on the essentials: torque. With 82 Nm available from 8,000 rpm, it offers a frank and linear response, much meatier than the FZ6 Fazer it replaces and which was a bit shrill. It sets the bar higher than the Kawasaki Z 750 of the time, not so much in raw power as in engine generosity.

What strikes you is the almost brutal honesty of its chassis. The Deltabox aluminum frame, the 43 mm inverted fork, and the swingarm are largely parts inherited from the Fazer 1000. Let's translate: you are piloting a 106 horsepower engine in a structure designed to handle 150. The feeling of solidity and reserve is palpable, even if the displayed weight of 215 kg fully fueled is felt in slow maneuvers. The ground clearance of 140 mm and the wheelbase of 1460 mm promise stability, while the brakes, with their 310 mm discs and four-piston monoblock calipers, offer effective bite. ABS was a welcome option, but the choice of radial fixings for the calipers was not on the agenda. A compromise that recalls that this Fazer 8 is not a track beast, but a road companion.
And that’s where its whole interest lies. With its 17-liter tank, its 815 mm seat with correct accessibility, and its full fairing that intelligently deflects turbulence, it is designed for daily commutes as well as weekend getaways. The design, sharper and inspired by the R6 rather than the FZ1, gives it a piercing look without being aggressive. Yamaha played the safety card by reusing a proven technical base, even if it meant lacking a bit of daring. The result is a reassuring, predictable machine that doesn’t reserve any unpleasant surprises for you.
Who is it for? For the touring rider looking for a complete motorcycle, capable of handling the highway without flinching while remaining agile in the city and fun on winding roads. For the motorcyclist moving from a mid-size cylinder and seeking more substance, without wanting the sometimes nervous character of a pure roadster. Its price of 8499 euros positioned it as a serious option against the competition. It didn’t revolutionize anything, but executed everything with great competence. It’s a motorcycle that disappears to make way for the simple pleasure of riding, a quality that, ultimately, is priceless.
