When Honda arrived with its Shadow in the 125 custom segment, Yamaha took the hit. The Virago, which had held the lead for years, suddenly seemed dated, surpassed, and outmoded. Yamaha’s response wasn’t long in coming: draw on the DNA of its large customs, copy the visual codes of higher displacement models, and release the Yamaha 125 Dragstar to take back the initiative. On paper, the strategy holds up.

And visually, the operation is a success. The bike's frame far exceeds what one expects from a 125: prominent tank, low lines, a 130/90-15 rear wheel that anchors the machine to the ground with authority. The 670 mm seat facilitates ground access for almost all builds, which appeals to beginners attracted by the custom aesthetic without wanting to struggle with a machine that is too tall. The Yamaha 125 Dragstar engine struggles to carry this weight with enthusiasm, and the 5-speed gearbox doesn’t perform miracles. The front brake, a 282 mm disc pinched by a two-piston caliper, is sufficient for the task. The maximum speed of 110 km/h places the machine just at the limit for national road journeys, no more. It is a daily tool, not a machine for sensations.
