Overview

When Honda arrived with its Shadow in the 125 custom segment, Yamaha took the hit. The Virago, which had held the lead for years, suddenly seemed dated, surpassed, and outmoded. Yamaha’s response wasn’t long in coming: draw on the DNA of its large customs, copy the visual codes of higher displacement models, and release the Yamaha 125 Dragstar to take back the initiative. On paper, the strategy holds up.

Yamaha 125 DRAGSTAR

And visually, the operation is a success. The bike's frame far exceeds what one expects from a 125: prominent tank, low lines, a 130/90-15 rear wheel that anchors the machine to the ground with authority. The 670 mm seat facilitates ground access for almost all builds, which appeals to beginners attracted by the custom aesthetic without wanting to struggle with a machine that is too tall. At €3965 when new, the Yamaha 125 Dragstar price seemed justified given the careful finish and the work done on the plastics and chrome. On this point, the Drag Star buried the Virago without discussion.

The trouble lies beneath the cylinder head cover. The 124 cc V-twin engine, derived from the Virago but reworked, produces 13 hp at 10,000 rpm and 9.80 Nm of torque at 8,000 rpm. These figures would be acceptable if the machine didn’t weigh 144 kg dry. The Yamaha 125 Dragstar engine struggles to carry this weight with enthusiasm, and the 5-speed gearbox doesn’t perform miracles. The Yamaha 125 Dragstar carburetor also requires careful adjustment to obtain clean carburetion, especially when cold. The vibrations transmitted to the wrists and footrests at high engine speeds recall that this is not a machine with the latest generation mechanics. Faced with the lively and sonorous single-cylinder engine of the Shadow, the Yamaha twin sounds hollow, literally and figuratively.

What saves the day is the road handling. The 35 mm telescopic fork and the two rear shock absorbers offer a respectable comfort-handling compromise for urban and suburban use. The front brake, a 282 mm disc pinched by a two-piston caliper, is sufficient for the task. The maximum speed of 110 km/h places the machine just at the limit for national road journeys, no more. It is a daily tool, not a machine for sensations.

Today, a Yamaha 125 Dragstar can be easily found on leboncoin, often at very accessible prices. Yamaha 125 Dragstar spare parts remain available, and the community of owners provides useful resources for adjusting the Yamaha 125 Dragstar carburetor or replacing the Yamaha 125 Dragstar CDI. Some people enjoy transforming the machine into a Yamaha 125 Dragstar bobber or a Yamaha 125 Dragstar chopper, which ultimately suits it quite well. The platform lends itself well to light modifications, and the Yamaha 125 Dragstar engine kit allows to give a second breath to a worn engine. It is not the best 125 custom of its time, but it has managed to create a base of loyal fans who have survived much better than its commercial reputation.
