Overview

When the Honda Shadow arrived on the accessible A1 license custom segment, Yamaha took the blow like a slap. The Virago, which had reigned unchallenged for years, suddenly found itself outdated, aged, vulnerable. The brand's response was not long in coming: draw on the DNA of the large XVS models and decline the concept in 125. Thus was born this Yamaha 125 Dragstar, announced as the quintessential accessible Japanese custom, with a frame that frankly looks towards the 600s.

Yamaha 125 DRAGSTAR

And on paper, the promise is kept. Visually, the motorcycle imposes itself. The proportions are generous, the finish is refined, the style is consistent from the 18-inch front wheel to the 130/90-15 rear tire. For 3965 euros new, the price of the new Yamaha 125 Dragstar seemed reasonable compared to what the competition offered. The tubular steel double cradle, the 35 mm telescopic fork, the two rear shock absorbers: everything breathes the old-school solidity of a chopper designed to last. We understand why, years later, the Yamaha 125 Dragstar used still circulates abundantly on Leboncoin.

The problem lies with the engine. This 124 cc V-twin, an improved successor to the Virago, develops 13 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and delivers 9.8 Nm at 8,000 rpm. These figures would be correct for a lightweight machine, but with 144 kg dry weight to move, the numbers don't quite add up. The 5-speed gearbox helps to scrape every watt available, the 11:1 compression ratio shows that the engineers sought to get the maximum out of the 41 mm bore, yet the Shadow remained ahead in practice. The Yamaha 125 Dragstar carburetor and the Yamaha 125 Dragstar CDI have often been at the heart of discussions by owners seeking to optimize acceleration, the Yamaha 125 Dragstar carburetor adjustment becoming almost a rite of initiation for the brand's enthusiasts. Add to that perceptible vibrations at high revs and a sound that lacks character, and the twin struggles to convince against the Honda block of the time.

It would be unfair to stop there. The Yamaha 125 Dragstar engine is not bad, it is simply limited. In everyday use, on secondary roads or in town, the motorcycle proves docile, healthy, easy to live with. The low 670 mm seat reassures modest builds, the 9.5-liter tank offers correct autonomy before looking for a station. The maximum speed of 110 km/h confines the machine to its natural territory, far from the motorways. For a young A1 license holder who dreams of a custom without wanting a cheap-looking beginner's motorcycle, this is a solid argument. Yamaha 125 Dragstar spare parts remain available, which explains the model's longevity on the used market.

The Yamaha 125 Dragstar 2001 and the Yamaha 125 Dragstar 2002 had laid the foundations, and this 2003 version represents a refined version of a motorcycle that never managed to dethrone its direct competitor. Custom enthusiasts often see in it a base for a Yamaha 125 Dragstar bobber or a starting point for a Yamaha 125 Dragstar chopper project. Perhaps that is its true vocation: not to beat the Shadow on its own terms, but to serve as a canvas for those who want a motorcycle to transform as much as to ride.
