Overview
In 2010, in a market saturated with Japanese and American clones, the Xingyue XY 400 attempted a unique gamble. This Chinese custom doesn’t seek to imitate Harley-Davidson or Honda Shadow models on a tight budget. Instead, it offers a minimalist, almost stripped-down formula that focuses on the essentials. A single cylinder, a fourteen-liter tank, a dry weight of 138 kilograms, and the bare necessities to devour asphalt. Its appearance evokes a raw simplicity, far from ostentatious chrome.

The engine is the centerpiece of this proposition. A 386 cm3 four-stroke single cylinder, water-cooled and carbureted, delivers 26.8 horsepower at 7500 rpm. These figures, modest for a 400 cm3 custom, betray a philosophy of suppleness rather than brute performance. The generous bore of 91 mm for a short stroke of 59.5 mm suggests an engine that prefers torque to stratospheric revs. One can easily imagine its relaxed rumble, an engine that pushes without ever shouting, perfect for straightaways and sweeping curves. The final chain transmission confirms this pragmatic orientation.
The chassis, with its generous wheelbase of 1500 mm and its low seat at 800 mm, promises a relaxed riding position and road stability. The ground clearance of 150 mm clearly announces its limits: one will not attack tight corners with this machine. The braking system, with a disc at the front and a drum at the rear, is a reflection of an era already gone elsewhere. It requires anticipation and measurement, an additional constraint in an equation where modernity is clearly not the priority. The high-profile tires, in 110/90 at the front and 130/90 at the rear, complete the profile of a placid roadster.
The Xingyue XY 400 is aimed at a very specific audience. It will not convince the American cruiser purist, too attached to the torque of a twin-cylinder engine, nor the novice seeking ABS and electronic injection. On the other hand, it represents an economical and unadorned option for those seeking a simple-to-maintain custom, light to maneuver in the city thanks to its low weight, and sufficient for short getaways. It is an honest machine within its limits, which does not claim to be what it is not. For the tinkerer or the motorcyclist on a very tight budget, it can be an entry point into the world of customs, with a keen awareness that each technical concession comes at a price.
