Overview

Motorcycle: Triumph Speed Triple S (2020)

Remember this name !!! It was one of the first to stir things up in the streets, one of the most punk gang leaders of London’s streets, a cat-tipper like no other... and many a rider came to twist its connecting rods. Unthinkable, and yet... And yet, when I look at it, this wolf motorcycle with a heart of steel, I realize it hides its game well. From one gear change to the next, the silhouette of the English streetfighter hasn't changed. The continuity of a compelling identity, where the look is perhaps one of the most important in motorcycle history. Today, the 1050 Speed Triple is back, stronger, more accomplished, more technological, more thrilling.

And will charm with the same allure. In this evolution, it has lost a bit of its denomination. It’s no longer the Speed Triple 100 S but the Speed Triple S. The centennial disappears; anyway, we never understood what it meant... or what it wanted. To better distinguish the model years, look at the rims. Yesterday’s Y-spokes give way to biased spokes, with a design close to the forged aluminum PVM wheels of the very first Speed Triple R. Apart from the shoes, you’ll need a good knowledge of the stickers to recognize it. Or directly stare at the new dashboard, just to widen your eyes with envy.

Here, we enter another dimension. That of full digital, tablets, colors, and digital life. The Speed miss now gains a TFT counter of the most beautiful effect. The Street sister opened the ball, then the Tigers seized it. Unbearable for Triumph’s star roadster to continue without it. Thanks to this 5-inch living screen, the rider becomes acquainted with the onboard information with a slight fascination. Furthermore, it can display three different display styles, associated with the riding modes. There are four on the Speed S: Road, Sport, Rain, and Rider. More is needed to satisfy the technological rider. The latter will be very satisfied with the backlit switches. A real treat, coming from the latest Tigers. And it’s slowly developing in the modern motorcycle world. And to think it’s been 50 years that car controls have been illuminated… Still? Okay, no problem. A cruise control also takes its place on board. And for safety, we find ABS and traction control; disconnectable for those who want to play at being reckless. Seasoned riders will be delighted, novices will have to learn to master the big 3-cylinder engine, more vigorous than ever.

The 3-cylinder engine has come a long way, and it continues to evolve. Even if some would have preferred a new base, it must be admitted that the 1050 still has some punch left. Triumph has changed no less than 105 parts to offer it more watts, more responsiveness, and more torque at all speeds. This magic wand brings it a nice handful of 10 extra horsepower. With 150 horsepower to distribute, the Speed Triple can return to battle with its head held high. Even if it still yields to the top of the segment, its character and galvanized spirit will make the pulse race. The torque, for its part, has increased by 4% to establish a maximum of 11.9 mkg.

To find watts, the engine builders had to rev the mechanics. The peak power is now 1000 rpm higher, at 10,500 rpm. Never mind, the engine is announced as more lively in its revs. To achieve this result, the manufacturer increased the compression ratio, changed the pistons, lightened the aluminum cylinder liners and the crankshaft pinion, installed new valve springs and high-lift cam profiles, redesigned the airbox, and improved the exhaust flow. The revised cylinder head allows for better gas evacuation, which transits in an enlarged catalytic converter and a lighter catalytic system. We also worked on various ancillary elements: a lighter battery and alternator, a new oil circuit to eliminate a few pipes and aerate the style, a slightly retouched gearbox, and a smaller starter.

Still very appreciated and of quality, the chassis retains its mission without modification. Distantly inspired by that of the captivating 955 Daytona, the perimeter aluminum frame receives the services of a monobrach, a 43 mm inverted fork, and a monoshock, both signed Showa; and adjustable everywhere. For the brakes, Brembo, powerful and convincing as desired. The equipment chosen features radial monoblock M4.34 calipers on 320 mm discs for the front; and a 255 mm disc for a double-piston caliper at the rear.

The R version is retained in the catalog but is now called RS. Still with a high-end equipment including Öhlins suspensions, less weight (3 kg), more advanced electronic assists with an inertial unit, an additional riding mode (Track), carbon parts, a pair of Arrow silencers, and a keyless start system.
