Who still remembers that a handful of passionate engineers in the workshops of Mandello del Lario decided one day to resurrect the spirit of the great Guzzis of yesteryear? The V11 Sport Naked, in its 2006 vintage, carries that heritage with rare elegance. It descends in a direct line from the V7 S, and it shows. Its generous lines, its massive presence, that transverse 90° V-twin spilling out of the frame like a heart too big for its ribcage. With its 1064 cc, this four-stroke twin is anything but a discreet engine. It's part of the show — it is the motorcycle as much as the frame that carries it.

On the performance front, we're talking 91 horsepower at 7800 rpm and 92.2 Nm of torque available from 6000 rpm. On paper, it's respectable without being earth-shattering. In reality, the big V-twin pulls cleanly from low revs, with that typical flexibility of long-stroke engines. But there's no denying a flat spot around 4000 rpm that somewhat breaks the momentum. The real pleasure can't be measured with a stopwatch. It's found in the vibrations of the flat-twin, in that characteristic rocking motion with every blip of the throttle, in the raw personality of a powerplant like no other. The six-speed gearbox, transmitted by shaft drive, has gained precision over the years, but it still demands a deft touch to shift smoothly. It's a far cry from the silkiness of a Japanese machine.
On the road, the V11 Sport Naked shows its old-school roadster temperament. Its 243 kg wet weight makes itself felt from the very first corners. It takes strong arms and physical commitment to tip it into a turn and hold it on line. The steel spine-and-interrupted-double-cradle frame, paired with a 40 mm inverted fork and a rear mono-shock, provides reassuring stability once a line is chosen. But the overall rigidity shows its limits on rough surfaces or when the pace picks up. The Guzzi is no sportbike — there's no point comparing it to a Suzuki GSV-R or a Triumph Speed Triple of the same era. It plays in a different register, one of pure mechanical pleasure, of spirited touring rather than all-out attack.

Braking, on the other hand, is a genuine strong point. Two 320 mm front discs gripped by four-piston calipers, a 282 mm disc with a two-piston caliper at the rear. The setup, signed Brembo, delivers power and modulation that inspire confidence, even when you push the machine toward its limits. The 800 mm seat height and 22-liter tank allow for long stints without discomfort, which suits the bike's touring brief perfectly. The claimed top speed of 215 km/h confirms that the V11 isn't meant to set off speed cameras, but rather to devour back roads with relish.
Then there's the question of price. At 11,200 euros in 2006, the V11 Sport Naked was positioned above several competitors better equipped in technology. But Guzzi has never sold technology. The brand sells character, soul, a riding experience unlike anything else on the market. This motorcycle is aimed at riders who've already logged miles, who know what they're looking for and who accept a few flaws in exchange for a bold personality. If you're a beginner, move along — the 243 kg and the V-twin's temperament don't forgive approximation. For a lover of fine Italian machinery, willing to work with a strong-willed character, the V11 remains an endearing machine, the kind you don't easily part with once you've had a taste.
