Overview

How many special editions can a legend endure before losing its soul? The Bonneville has met that challenge for decades — from the Steve McQueen to the Bud Ekins and the Gold Line — without ever truly repeating itself. The 2023 Chrome Edition continues this tradition with a clear ambition: to push the finish to a point where craftsmanship borders on obsession.

Triumph 1200 Bonneville T 120 Chrome édition

The tank is the focal point of this single-year limited edition. Triumph has dressed it in a chrome sheet flanked by Meriden Blue, a shade borrowed directly from the Gulf liveries of the racing era. A nod to the connoisseurs, a visual slap to everyone else. The result is striking, but buyers should know what they're getting into: more than five additional hours of work compared to a standard model, including three hours of hand polishing and nearly two hours of chrome plating, followed by a succession of masking, primers, paint layers, and repeated inspections. The first speck of dust, a single insect, or an improperly wiped raindrop will show immediately on that mirror surface. This tank is not for careless owners.

Beneath this gala bodywork, the T120 remains what it has always been: a well-built neo-retro, striking a successful balance between vintage aesthetics and modern technical content. The 1200 cc parallel twin produces 80 horsepower at 6,550 rpm — a modest figure on paper — but the 104.9 Nm of torque available from 3,500 rpm tells a different story. This is the kind of engine that responds to the slightest twist of the wrist without needing to be revved out, a stocky and reassuring character that stands in contrast to the sporty roadsters from Aprilia or Ducati playing in entirely different registers. The 900 version exists, in both standard and Chrome Edition trim, but it doesn't deliver that same sense of mechanical fullness.

The vintage dress is refined and coherent: wire-spoke wheels, flat seat, fork gaiters, round headlight, exhaust with a compact profile. Triumph has managed to avoid retro caricature by integrating switchable traction control, ABS, cruise control, two riding modes, a ride-by-wire throttle, and LED lighting. The USB port tucked under the seat is a reminder that it's 2023, even if the looks say 1969. At 236 kg fully fuelled, the Bonneville is no lightweight, though the 790 mm seat height keeps it accessible to a wide range of riders.

At €14,895, the Chrome Edition is aimed at a buyer who knows exactly what they're purchasing: a characterful all-around motorcycle equally at home on a Sunday ride or a daily commute, but above all a piece to look at as much as to ride. This is not a motorcycle for track day enthusiasts or those chasing raw performance. It's a motorcycle for those who appreciate fine machinery and brand heritage, and who accept spending more time caring for it than giving it a quick wash.
