Overview
Thirty examples. That's all Triumph was willing to concede for this Dark Edition version of the 2013 Speed Triple R, and even then, exclusively reserved for the British market. Suffice it to say that if you are reading these lines from the continent, you can already mourn the possibility of owning one. This assumed rationing says a lot about the philosophy of the object: here, the goal is not to sell, but to create desire.

What distinguishes this limited series from the standard Speed Triple R lies entirely in its bodywork. Triumph entrusted the brushes to the 8 Ball Paintwork Europe workshops, and the result is unambiguous. The deep black paint is striped with red bands, the tank features the Union Jack as an emblem, and the whole is enhanced with a lower fairing and a windscreen that further harden the silhouette. This is workshop work, not low-quality decals. It shows, it is earned, and it partly justifies the €13,399 asking price.
However, do not look for a hidden mechanical improvement beneath the paint. The Dark Edition is entirely based on the already formidable R platform. This is not a handicap: the 1,050 cm3 three-cylinder engine produces 135 horsepower at 9,250 rpm with a torque of 107.9 Nm available at 7,500 rpm, which places the Speed Triple in a category of commitment that few roadsters dare to assume. Facing a KTM 1090 Super Duke R or a BMW S 1000 R of the time, the Triumph triple plays a different score, more organic, with that inimitable sound that builds in revs. The perimeter aluminum frame is entirely suspended by Öhlins, a 43 mm NIX 30 inverted fork in entraxe, a TTX36 mono shock absorber at the outlet, without compromise or a lightweight version. Forged aluminum PVM rims and radial-mounted Brembo braking complete a technical picture that has nothing to be ashamed of compared to machines sold for much more. With 219 kg fully fueled and a seat at 828 mm, handling is not trivial, but the rider who mounts this machine generally knows where they are putting their feet.
The only objective regret is the absence of functional bonuses. A pair of silencers, a quickshifter, an additional mapping adjustment would have transformed the test. But Triumph chose not to dilute the message: this edition exists for the eyes and for the ego, not for the track. This is honest, provided you accept paying the price of a collector's item rather than a technical evolution. The target audience is clearly that of the enthusiast who already owns a high-performance machine and wants something that no one else has in their garage. Not the beginner, not the commuter. The motorcycle collector, the one who understands what thirty numbered copies mean.
