Overview
What’s the point of a large trail bike when everyone seems to want 130 horsepower monsters and electronics worthy of an F35 cockpit? Suzuki responds with an old-school philosophy, that of a reliable engine, well-thought-out ergonomics, and a price that doesn’t break the bank. The V-Strom 1050SE, priced around €12,999 for its 1000 cm³ version, is not a revolution. It's a quiet, almost reassuring evolution, for those seeking a motorcycle capable of everything without making a fuss.

The heart of the machine remains this 1037 cm³ L-twin cylinder, an engine proven over decades. With 107 horsepower at 8500 rpm and 100 Nm of torque at 6000 rpm, the figures won’t shake a BMW R 1250 GS or a KTM 1290 Super Adventure. But that’s where Suzuki’s intelligence lies: this engine offers progressivity, reliability, and fuel efficiency that many of its more nervous competitors lack. The wet weight of 242 kg is not light, but it is well distributed, and the seat height of 855 mm remains accessible for a rider of average height. You can feel that the engineers worked on feel rather than the pursuit of performance: gear ratios have been revised, the bidirectional quickshifter facilitates gear changes, and ride-by-wire injection offers three engine maps to adapt the throttle response to desires or conditions.
On the equipment side, the 1050SE has finally caught up. The 5-inch color TFT screen, already seen on the Katana or GSX-S models, brings a welcome touch of modernity to the dashboard. The cruise control is more precise, the Hill Start Control avoids scares when starting on a slope, and traction control offers three modes, including one that can be deactivated for more daring riders. Handguards, a tool-free adjustable windscreen, and a height-adjustable seat are now standard, small additions that make a big difference on the road. Braking, with its two 310 mm front discs and radial four-piston caliper, offers honest power without being intimidating, sufficient for this type of machine that is not made for the track.
Compared to a Triumph Tiger 1200 or a Ducati Multistrada V4, the V-Strom 1050SE positions itself as the sensible, almost wise option. It doesn’t seek to impress with stratospheric figures or experimental technologies. It offers a benevolent versatility, increased comfort, and mechanics whose robustness is well known. Its 20-liter tank ensures correct autonomy for long journeys, and its style, with its squared lines inspired by the old DR 750, has a retro charm that will appeal to those who do not appreciate overly futuristic designs. It’s a motorcycle for the touring rider who prefers regularity to showmanship, for those who want to leave for two weeks without worrying a thousand questions about the reliability or complexity of the electronics.
Ultimately, the V-Strom 1050SE is not the motorcycle that makes you dream in magazines with epic photos. It’s the one that does the job, day after day, without drama. Its price, around €12,999, is a massive argument against competitors who often flirt with €20,000 when properly equipped. It may never be the fastest, lightest, or most technologically advanced in the segment, but it could well be the most logical for many motorcyclists seeking a faithful and reliable companion.
