Overview

How do you make a power cruiser with the look of a circus beast remain accessible without sacrificing its aura? Suzuki found the answer in 2009 with the M 1500 Intruder, a sweetened but clever version of its large 1800. The trick? Keep the entire flashy style, that spaceship silhouette with beveled lines, the 43 mm inverted fork, and the triangular LED taillight, but seriously cut back on the mechanics and some technical details to offer a price of €11,499, nearly €3,000 less than its predecessor. The result is a custom that impresses passersby, but reveals its compromises once in the saddle.

Suzuki M 1500 INTRUDER

Under the 18-liter tank beats a 1462 cm3 V-twin, a classic architecture but whose performance is clearly behind the standards of the power cruiser segment. With 80 horsepower at 4800 rpm and 122.6 Nm of torque at 2700 rpm, we are far from the explosion of a Yamaha V-Max or even the 1800 Intruder and its additional 45 horsepower. The engine remains sufficient for honest acceleration and generous mid-range pull, but lacks the low-end brutality that usually defines the category. It simply settles for being a good, big twin, supple and round, ideal for cruising at 110 km/h on a straight road.

Handling is where this “little” brother takes its revenge. With its 328 kg all fueled up and a rear tire limited to 200 wide (instead of 240 on the 1800), it gains relative agility. Let's not dream, the wheelbase remains long and the weight considerable, but changes of direction are less laborious. Braking, for its part, has been rationalized: the radial four-piston calipers are gone, replaced by classic calipers. It is effective without being sporty, in the image of the motorcycle.

Ultimately, this Suzuki M 1500 Intruder is aimed at the rider who wants the aggressive look and attitude of a power cruiser, without necessarily assuming its excessive power, expensive maintenance, or prohibitive price. It is a grand touring custom with a relaxed riding position, a quiet engine, and a practical shaft drive. It creates an illusion in the local café, but on the road, it admits to its more peaceful nature. A reasonable choice for those who prefer presence over pure performance.
