Overview
Who said a muscular roadster had to necessarily play chameleon by disguising itself as an over-stylized hyper-naked? In 2016, Suzuki took a contrary approach with this GSX-S 1000 Yoshimura Special Edition, an assumed bet: take the brutal heart of a GSX-R 1000, house it in a slightly softened sport frame, and let the legendary preparer Yoshimura add the finishing touch. Result? A machine that doesn’t cheat on its DNA, with its 145 horsepower at 10,000 rpm, its 104 Nm of torque already well present at mid-range, and a wet weight of 205 kg. At the time, facing competition that bet everything on electronics and aggressive design, Suzuki played the card of raw simplicity and mechanical efficiency.

Yoshimura’s magic first works to the eye. The gray and red striped livery is not just marketing dressing. Every detail counts: steering nut, filler cap, handlebar ends, the famous R-11 silencer… everything bears the mark of the renowned Japanese tuner. This exhaust is not just an aesthetic accessory. It releases a high-pitched and snarling voice, characteristic of worked Suzuki 4-cylinder engines, and above all, it lightens the beast by nearly 4.5 kg compared to the original exhaust. A not negligible gain when seeking to awaken the sensations of an already nervous engine.
But this special edition assumes its selfish character. The passenger? Forgotten. The two-seat saddle is replaced by a single-seat cover, and the rear footpegs are supplied… in a separate carton. It is a motorcycle designed for the solo rider, the one who wants to feel the full power of the 999 cm³ engine without compromise. The chassis, a perimeter aluminum frame directly inspired by the sport model, and the 43 mm inverted fork offer precise and reassuring handling. Brembo brakes mounted on 310 mm discs stop without discussion. It is a machine that requires commitment, more suited to experienced sporty road riders than beginners, with a seat height of 815 mm that can be intimidating.
At more than €12,500 at its release, this limited series clearly positioned itself as an object for enthusiasts. It did not compete with the sophisticated electronics of a BMW S 1000 R or the theatrical character of a KTM 1290 Super Duke R. No, its argument was elsewhere: authenticity. It is the pure, mechanical sensation of a legendary engine slightly civilized, dressed by one of the biggest names in motorcycle tuning. Its flaw? Perhaps this very character, a little too spartan and focused on the essential for an era that was beginning to demand omnipresent driving aids. But for those seeking a roadster with a sporty temperament, without digital embellishments, this GSX-S 1000 Yoshimura remains a strong, almost anachronistic, and terribly endearing gesture.
