Overview

So, you want to play in the big streetfighter arena without breaking the bank on a highly-equipped Italian machine? Suzuki has the answer, and it's brutally simple. Take the heart of an old GSX-R 1000, strip it of its fairing, graft on a frame and road-adapted suspension, and there you have it: the GSX-S 1000 was born. A concept that evokes the late 2000s, but which remains incredibly relevant today. This 2018 Team Suzuki edition is just the icing on the cake, a paint job and a free exhaust to enhance already well-proven mechanics.

Suzuki GSX-S 1000 Team Suzuki

Let's be honest, at nearly €14,000, you're in the same price range as some entry-level Italians. But where a Ducati or an MV Agusta would drown you in riding modes and TFT screens, Suzuki focuses on the essentials: an engine. And what an engine! This 999 cm3 inline four-cylinder, inherited from the sportbike, delivers 150 horsepower at 10,000 rpm and a torque of 106 Nm. The figures may seem modest in the age of 200 horsepower, but they are deceptive. The power is accessible, linear, and the bike pulls like a train from mid-range. It doesn’t look for a fight, it gives it to you directly. With its 209 kg when ready to ride, it’s not the lightest, but its low center of gravity makes it surprisingly agile for a roadster in this category.

The Team Suzuki edition mainly brings cosmetic enhancements. Two colors, red or blue, embellished with a very "sponsor racing" graphic livery. It’s noticeable, it’s not delicate, but it has the merit of taking the beast out of anonymity. The real technical added value lies in the titanium Akrapovic silencer, which lightens the rear by 1.2 kg and gives the whole thing a much rawer voice. We add a numbered plate on the tank and an aluminum license plate holder, and that's it. It's light in terms of specific equipment, but the supplement compared to the standard version is consistent, especially considering the price of the Akrapovic as an accessory.

What it lacks is in the electronics. You get ABS and rudimentary traction control. That’s it. No power modes, no wheelie control, no cornering ABS, let alone a quickshifter or electric shifting. For a modern roadster at this price, it’s just below expectations. The competition, such as the Yamaha MT-10 or the Kawasaki Z1000 of the time, already offered more comprehensive packages. This clearly positions this GSX-S 1000 for a purist audience, for mechanics who prefer raw feel to digital assistance. It’s a machine for those who want a hypersport without fairing, without frills, but with explosive character and proven reliability.

Ultimately, this Team Suzuki is a statement of intent. It doesn't seek to be the most versatile or the most technologically advanced of the big roadsters. It is there to remind you that the pleasure of motorcycling can still be summed up in an incredibly healthy engine, a competent chassis and a riding position that puts you in direct contact with the road. For the sporty touring rider or the former track rider who doesn't want to mess with factory settings at full throttle, it's a compelling option. It forgives less than a modern bike, it demands more from its rider, but it delivers pure sensations what it doesn’t give in gadgets. A beautiful brute, ultimately, which fully embraces its heritage.
